Typing words, but not adding them to dictionary

Is there a way to type a word on the HTC Desire keyboard (as opposed to Swype or a standard android keyboard) that does not exist in the dictionary - but NOT to add it to the dictionary.

For example, say I want to type a word that I know is not in the dictionary - I cant seem to make that stay on the screen without selecting it, but then it gets added to the dictionary. Sometimes I am spelling silly words that I don't want to add to the dictionary.

If you press anywhere in the field you're typing in, it'll close the word suggestion window without further action. Seems to work reliably for me.
