Motorola's Droid Bionic and possibly Atrix 4G could be hit by a major power bug that could sabotage their launches, tipsters have said in the past few days. Both dual-core smartphones reportedly have an issue detected in the pre-release stage with the power management unit that triggers "severe" overheating that can affect reception, booting and consistent power use. One of the two sources in HowardForums, known Motorola insider xbernaut, claimed the issue was "unfixable" and could persist for launch devices, not just prototypes.

yea it all depends on the device but i often dont like to be the first adopter i usually wait a week or so myself just to see what the bugs are.

I have a hard time believing this. This device seems to have been in testing for quite some time, since it was referred to as the Olympus. Could it be that the sources got older test units and that the problem has been fixed already on production units? That's my guess.

Interesting. I wonder if this is why we haven't heard much from AT&T or Motorola on the Atrix release date? If this is true I am really surprised that they are just finding this out. Pre-production units have been observed in the wild for some time. You would think this would have been identified and fixed by CES.

Did anyone notice if the units at CES were over heating? I mean there - they were getting some heavy use. So if they were to over heat - that would have been the place for it to happen.

I get to play with a droid bionic next friday at our district best buy verizon event down here so I'll tel you if I notice anything, its probably just someone trying to start a fire.

Theyre giving away prizes too so hopefully I walk away with a new phone!

I would recommend reading the following editorial. I agree with it 100 percent, and it's why we're not doing anything about this on the blog.

Editorial: bugs on unreleased phones don't matter -- Engadget

Thank you for injecting som sanity here. The latest is that Motorola says the device will ship as scheduled. I suspect there may have been an issue on the early device but it was fixed long ago and in about a month we will all be happy as can be with our new phones.

The tester who rumored this might used a prototype without a power management ship in it , just like the BlackBerry PlayBook issue few days ago .
Or could be a hater wanna miss things up for Motorola (they are allot)
