Unable to charge after KitKat update

I wasn't having any issues prior to the update. I immediately found the charging to be very finicky. If I'm lucky, I get the red X; at least it charges, albeit slowly. Usually, I can't get the phone to charge at all. My wife's phone is the same way. The battery also drains very fast. I just went from 30% to 15% in about 20 minutes without any real use.

My son's phone doesn't seem to have an issue. He got his phone later; I wonder if it was only a certain batch of phones that were affected.
