I talked with Sprint about getting my S7 unlocked so it can be used internationally. They said they unlocked it, but I still get the message 'you can currently only use your service provider UICC with this device'
Sprint says, 'yeah, but it's unlocked'.
Is there some way for me to verify BEFORE I get to Australia?

Are you near Canada or Mexico? If so then you can try to go there

That certainly would make it easy, but, no, I'm in Chicago. I take it, then, that there's no easy way to verify an unlocked phone?

Did they give you an unlock code? I bought mine straight from Samsung and they provided me with the unlock codes so if I was travelling I code unlock it, stick In a different Sim card...then when you get back from where ever just unlock again and stick in your countries sim

No, no unlock code. But, last year when we traveled to Australia and I had the Galaxy S5, Sprint unlocked Over The Air, like they said they did this time. But last year the S5 didn't give the message seen in my original post. So, I'm less confident that it worked with the S7.

If it is fully unlocked then you can try another sim from tmobile or whatever. But if it is only unlocked for international use then that won't work.

OK, thanks. So, if I find someone with a Tmobile phone and try their sim and it works, that would mean the phone if fully unlocked and would work internationally as well? Did not know that's how it works

Yeah. In the past, Verizon would unlock phones for international use (before 4GLTE). But they wouldn't work on domestic carriers. Not sure if sprint is doing the same thing but... If it works with a Tmobile sim then you should be good to go.
