sicario666 sent me the 4.0.4 radios. I am unlocked and rooted. Now what? Please help!

I just want the 4.0.4 radios for now. I will worry about the rest later. Nothing is on my phone so no need to back up (I think).

Unlocked and rooted. Have the radio files, now what?

are the files .zip?

also, have you flashed clockworkmod recovery with rom manager yet?
if no, then you should download rom manager and flash recovery. then you should make a backup.
if yes, you should make a backup, because safety first, and then if the radios are in .zip format you can flash them in recovery mode following cyber warrior's instructions in the sticky post in the rooting subforum...

if the files aren't .zips you can flash the radio other ways but this would probably be the easiest for you.

Gnex Girl --

You need to download Rom Manager from the market, and flash clockwork recovery (which is inside of RM).

You should flash the radios and the 4.0.4 bootloader.

Essentially, take the zip and put it on your phone (use your USB). When you install Rom Manager, open it, and "reboot into recovery." You'll see a similarly worded option. Do that. It'll say install from zip. Go there, choose the file, and boom.

For CWM (recovery), volume up/down moves the cursor, power selects.

Agree with that. use the .zips you dont want the extracted files for this.
flash recovery with rom manager - make a nandroid back up - then restart, boot back into recovery mode thru rom manager or the manual way with the vol and power key, and flash the radios as you would a ROM (except to flash a radio you don't need to wipe data - you can still wipe the cache and the dalvik cache but i dont think its really necessary. i just do to be on the safe side).
really good instructions for doing all of the above can be found in this thread:

Good advice. Always backup, and when flashing between roms--regardless of what people say, IMHO--you must always wipe the data and the cache. You will see the menu options once you reboot into recovery.

So to sum it up:

(1) Place the zip file on your phone
(2) Download Rom Manager, flash/install clockworkmod recovery
(3) Reboot into recovery
(4) Backup
(5) Install from zip
(6) Choose the zip
(7) Go have a cigarette, drink, whatever
(8) In 30 seconds it should be good
(9) Reboot
(10) 4G

I agree. Some people take too many chances though, and the last thing I'd want is a fellow AC'er screwing something up.

Personally, I'll even wipe between nightlies, because the first bootloop I got is my last (and it was frightening).

true i make backups and clear data/cache/and dalvik like it's my job.

i havent bootlooped with the nexus yet but learned the ropes on my dinc and had lots then.

this phone is just too nice to screw up. and i bought it off contract so ... no bricking.

gnex girl - good luck i would follow those directions and read cyber's thread because it will help you get a good understanding of things and there's pics.

Cut my teeth on a Dinc myself, although I felt like an uber geek having to "manually" unlock/root the Nexus due to no Mac one-click option. It was very gratifying.

GNex Girl--PM me if you have any questions (that goes to my GN and I may step out in a minute). Next up--kernels and roms!

i rooted my thunderbolt on launch day with terminal commands (also on mac), and in comparison gnex was reallly easy.
that said, it took me like 4 days of prep to understand the basics of using terminal back then, so i hear ya.

I flashed CWM Recovery and then made a backup before rebooting into recovery, is that OK?

The last time I used terminal was ~2007. So to say I was crapping my pants is the understatement of the century.

Is there a particular folder on the phone where I need to put the zip file?

Also, I am running Windows XP and it will not let me copy a zip file to my GNex as a Media Device or as a Camera. :(

No. And yes, what you said before is 100% good.

What I do is drop it into the main directory--not in a folder. After flashing I move the roms/gapps (you'll see what they are, essentially the google core apps), radios, etc. into a separate folder so I don't get confused.

It's good to have 1 backup and 1 rom/gapps zip on your phone, in some folder or elsewhere, at all times.

GNex - flashing roms is essentially the same pattern. Let me copy/paste an email/guide I send out to folks just starting out:

(1) Find a rom and see if it requires a Google Apps (GAPPS) file. Get
the corresponding GAPPS zip. Now you have 2 zips. Place them in your
phone (hook it up via USB; you may make a folder within your phone's
directory like I did, or just put them right there in the base
directory/folder).

So for AOKP, download Milestone 3, download AOKP's (or Roman's, the
lead developer's) GAPPS, and place them either in a custom folder or
in the base directory. This is what you flash.

(2) UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED FROM WHERE YOU GOT YOUR ROM/GAPPS--ALWAYS
ALWAYS ALWAYS WIPE WHEN FLASHING!

Sometimes, you can get away without wiping. Say you downloaded toro
build 21. Then they released 22. Wipe? You should, but you don't
necessarily "have to." Unless you're downloading like that (i.e., if
it's essentially a direct upgrade of your present rom), WIPE. What do
I mean by "wiping"? Go into recovery/CWM, then wipe data/factory
reset, and then do the wipe directly below it--the cache. Your phone
is now clean.

(3) Flash the Rom!

Immediately after wipe, don't go back, don't pass go, don't collect
$200--go to flash from zip, find the rom's .zip file, and boom. Rom
is in.

(4) Flash GAPPS!

Just like after you wiped, do NOT reboot! You'll be severely screwed
here if you reboot without GAPPs. So do exactly what you did with the
rom; flash from zip, find the GAPPS zip file, and boom. GAPPS are in.

(5) Reboot

Now, this might be a bit breathtaking (literally). The first boot
sequence is always the longest. I have no idea why. But once it
vibrates and that damned unicorn disappears, set up your phone, and
remember to go to the market and redownload all of your
apps--ESPECIALLY Rom Manager (if you bought the premium, get that too
and make sure to "unlock"). Also, be sure to flash the latest CWM.
If it says you have the latest, then don't worry. Always good to have
the latest, though.

(6) Apply franco.kernel. Do exactly what you did when you bought it.
Hit the download (or whatever it is button) and then boom, you're done
and your phone is ready to rock. (You can ignore this if you don't want it)
