Unlocked Pixel 6 on Verizon....will I regret not having mm wave 5G?

Verizon is charging an extra $100 for their version of the Pixel 6 w/ mm wave 5G. I'm tempted to save $100 and get the unlocked version but I just wonder if I'll regret that decision down the road... how is low band 5G on Verizon? I've not yet experienced it.

I have a 6 Pro. Where I live in the Phoenix area the regular Nationwide 5G is everywhere so mine always shows 5G. When I run Speedtest my usual speeds are around 100mb/s down and 50 to 60 upload. It happens that my work is right next to a tower, so I get 240 to 260 down in that area.

There are many areas in town that have the 5G mm wave, but I haven't been in one of those areas yet, but I'm sure the speed is substantially better. I would definitely get the version that has mm wave because I keep the devices 2 or 3 years and I know I would regret not having that capability as that coverage becomes more available each day.

IMO there's a way to go before we get to benefit from it..you get blazing speeds but need to be closer to the frequency as struggles with distances ..I've been using unlocked phones on Verizon and do get 5G in areas that are good but plenty of places are not reached ...

If you are questioning whether or not you need the UWB version, you don't. If you need it, you would already have a set reason in mind and this wouldn't be a question.

Not trying to be flippant, but that's what it boils down to. Even if you have a constant reliable UWB signal, 99.9% of the population won't see any meaningful difference in the user experience.

In the state of LA, it is only by the Superdome! The rest of state notta! Hell, we don't even have Nationwide 5g on I10 corridor. I was shocked by how little of Baton Rouge had 5g. So, I am glad I saved the $100

I had mmwave on my pixel 5 and most of the times was slower than LTE lol at leatvin my area. I don't think it will matter much for most people for at least another 3 years.

Depends on where you live or plan to live in the near future. In some locations, mmWave is somewhere out there in the next decade...maybe.

I personally think you’ll be missing out if you have the availability to have the fastest downloads that Verizon offers. I used it in Sacramento, by the way had to walk in front of my house to get it, to download large files and movies. It was wonderful. This is a strong selling point for a reason to be with Verizon so I think you might be missing out on it. That being said I didn’t use it all that often so I think it will depend upon the individual on whether they’re missing out or not. Just my two cents.

Were you actually connected to the mm wave UWB signal? No way that should be lower than LTE, but the nationwide 5G (non-mm wave) isn't much more than re-branded LTE with many people reporting slower speeds.

Honestly it just said 5G I'm on Google Fi. Could have been sub 6 but even so sub 6 is faster than LTE and at times speeds weren't as good. I still kept 5G enabled all the time, but then there were some spots where it was much quicker than LTE but it was rare. I think depending where you live it's really based on how much coverage the carrier has in that area so I think sub 6 and mmwave to be widely available in most places to be consistent will still be a while. Back to the original question if you are someone who upgrades every 1-3 years I think you will be totally fine with just LTE and Sub 6.

It will also depend on what phone plan you're on. I'm on the Verizon 55+ Unlimited Loyalty plan, and it only uses 4G. I'd have to move to a more expensive plan to use 5G, whenever it finally got here. I have the P6 with a 4G sim card in it. Where I live, I'm sure that I won't need a 5G plan anytime soon, either! Unless you live in an area that has heavy 5G coverage, I wouldn't worry about it with this phone.

I'm on VZ with purchased P6 through VZ. I only see 5G up top, but how do I know it's mmWave? And yeah, my speeds are really hit or miss.

Damn it's annoying and confusing when people refer to mm wave as UWB... We should stop.

What is it with Americam network operators?

Verizon has the slower 5g and their much faster mmWave 5G. Its the faster mmWave that your paying $100 for. But mmWave is still limited to certain areas. So IMO until mmWave becomes as common as 4G LTE, no you won't really miss not having mmWave on your regular P6. Which is why the pro is just a little bit more future proof than the regular 6. But I honestly would't worry about mmWave for another few years.

What's the problem with the name that makes it confusing?

The fact that it's the name of a feature in phones, not that it should be.

If someone phrases a question: "do I actually need UWB?", how do we know if they're asking about mm wave, or the thing that unlocks your car and finds the smart tag+?

Realistically, I don't think either should use the term.
