Since my Pixel is finally paid off and I want to unlock it. There is a app on my phone that will automatically unlock it for me. What is the main purpose of unlocking my phone besides being able to use on other carriers when it's sold. Is it a good idea to do so or keep it unlocked?

Not always....some of the carrier ones like Verizon start out locked.

No it was Google unlocked.
But OP can call tmobile to register the approval unlock and when they send a email for confirmation its unlocked can proceed to device unlock app to have it sim unlocked
