Ok so my Evo 3D is awesome... but my only problem is that the service is spotty where I live with Sprint, but Verizon/AT&T have decent service. Now my co-worker told me I could "unlock" my phone and that means that now I can get service from Verizon, AT&T, etc. Is this true? Also wondering how to do this and will it mess up phone? Lastly, what is the difference between unlocking and rooting a phone? Thanks!

Thats NOT True what your co-worker said.
Unlocking a cell phone only applies to GSM devices that are locked down to a single carrier due to subsidys. AKA subsidy lock.
With our phones being CDMA, they are ESN specific to the carrier.
So first thing is, CDMA and GSM are 2 different wireless protocols.
GSM are compatible if they are unlocked.
CDMA are ESN Specific and can only be used on a particular carrier that has the ESN in their database.
Now it is possible to get a carrier to ADD your ESN. MetroPCS and Cricket do this. Then you still have to flash or reprogram your device to work on thier towers.
Rooting a phone gives you full access, or Root access to your devices main files.
Think of it as a windows computer, you are not supposed to access the windows directory because thats where the system files are. With root access you can.
Another way to think of it is User access and Administration access.
Lots of corporate work computers are limited user access and unrestricted Administrator access.

Hope this helps.
