Unlocking AT & T G4 for use in Europe?

I'm going to Europe on business in June. I am in the midst of a 2 year AT & T contract with monthly G4 installment payments along with cellular service. I would like to get a SIM card and continue using my phone in Europe in June but return to AT & T service upon returning to the U.S. Given that I still owe money on my phone I'm sure AT & T won't unlock my G4 for me. Are there any other alternatives or software or codes that might unlock it to use abroad with a different SIM card? I like the phone and would rather not have to buy a second mobile for Europe. Thank you for any suggestions.

AT&T Wireless Consumer Device Unlock Request for unlocking. ((For a short trip to Europe they might let you unlock it.) The frequencies in the phone, however, may not be compatible with he carrier you plan to use in Europe, as far as data goes.

The Unlock Request page won't work unless the phone is out of installment plan (AT&T Next right?). You could pay off the phone, and then unlock it. Or if you could do the AT&T Passport plan if you don't use too much data or phone calls. It has unlimited txt so you could txt all day long with everyone in the US.

I wasn't aware an AT & T Passport plan existed. Paying off the phone is also an attractive idea. Then I would be free to do anything with it, although I will indeed look into the frequency issue.

I'll think about all the options mentioned.
