Hi everyone. I'll be honest, I've been terrified to create an account on XDA because there are some horribly impatient individuals there that seem to have zero patience for people (like me) who don't spend their waking minutes developing software or hacking. The SGSIIE4GT is the first killer smartphone I've owned, but my efforts on XDA for answers to my questions go unresolved. So I've bit the bullet, and hoping people on here can help me out. I'm a self-confessed noob, but I'm learning the ropes quickly. Please be kind.

I'm running the UnNamed Rom 2.0.1 and have done my own custom theming using Launcher Pro and stuff. However, there's two things on the ROM that I'd really like to customize/tweak, but can't quite seem to find the answers. I wanted to post this under the actual ROM thread in Development, but XDA said I can't because I'm new. I searched and searched other posts, but can't find my answers.

#1: Is there a tweak or setting or file I can change/add/remove so that I can get rid of the clock display in the status bar? I use SiMi clock on my home and lockscreens, but would like to minimize the crap on the top bar if possible by removing just the time display so all I have left is my alarm, wifi/signal, 3G/4G, and batt icon. Is it possible?

#2: The battery icon in the ROM has a % remaining built in, but I'd like to make it white instead of green. I've searched ROM Toolbox (I bought the paid version), but the 1% options are scarce and I can't find a 1% icon I like. So (a) is there a way to get more 1% battery options into ROM Toolbox to choose from, or (b) an area where I manually download a 1% battery (apk?) and replace the one in the ROM?

I hope that makes sense. This site and XDA is so enormous, I did my best to search for answers prior to posting, but haven't found solutions yet. Can anyone help me or point me to the answers. I appreciate any time and help you're willing to offer me!!

The two XDA forum members that have tweaked this ROM the most and actively made those tweaks available (or how to do it) are Playya and Sling (goes by Slingbox on this forum). I would look through their post history in the UnNamed thread for info. Playya has made some edits to the framework.jar that may get you where you want to be, but I'm afraid it may require some trial and error on your part. But hey, that's what Nandroid backups are for!

So ...

Sling started an UnNamed "goodies" thread in the themes sub-forum here -UnNamed goodies thread- - xda-developers. I'd suggest you start there and read through it. Also, Playaa posted some alternative battery icon images in ZIP form that can be flashed with CWM here -UnNamed goodies thread- - xda-developers. One of those may provide what you're looking for.

Thanks JayWill. I actually did post up my questions there, too. Gosh I've been hesitant tho, because that site seems to be for pros, of which I am not :p. I have been perusing both of those UnNamed ROM threads for a bit now, looking for answers. There's a lot of info on that site though, and a lot of is filled with jargon I don't understand :'(. I've been really happy with this ROM, as I'm getting almost 4-5 days battery life, and it runs so smooth, but I'm so stupid nit-picky on some things that I can't adjust myself (i.e. clock removal mod, 1% small white battery with black text). Thanks for looking out though!!

The really sad part is we're probably not going to see any more updates from the developer of this ROM. He had a AT&T GSII that he originally created UnNamed for, then he borrowed a Epic 4G Touch from a friend for 2 weeks and developed the ROM for our phone. Then he ditched Android all together and now has a Windows phone. It's sad because it's the most solid and stable TouchWiz based ROM for our phone. It also means official theme support will be non-existent, since Samsung keeps leaking new build versions (hopefully it will stop for awhile at EL29).

Still, I will probably run this ROM until a working ICS build is released. It's just that good (for me anyways). Everything available in more current ROM versions can be had on UnNamed if the owner wants it, but it requires some work and probably a lot of learning/trial-and-error. I changed the battery icon to one of the 1% versions in ROM Toolbox that I like enough, and I'm good with that. Hopefully UnNamed will be kept alive in Sling's "goodies" thread with flashable ZIPs to make things easy for the average user.

We shall see.

Oh also, don't be intimidated by XDA. There are plenty of novices in those forums, and plenty of good people willing to help. But those good people do get tired of the same questions over and over and over, so they can sometimes get a bit snippy. As long as it appears that you made an effort to search for the answer, most of the regulars are usually more than willing to help.

Can I ask you this first then?

Is there a place to go in ROM Toolbox where I can get more 1% battery options than are pre-loaded in the app? I'd love to have a horizontal white battery with black text inside of it for the %'s left. That would be tits. If I can't do that directly through the ROM Toolbox app, is there a site that has a grip of zip files with different battery choices for 1% lovers like me that I can flash? :)

When you say "working" ICS build, are you referring to ICS directly from Samsung? Or an actual third-party ROM that someone essentially creates that just mimics the ICS before it gets released? I haven't really had a chance to play with ICS yet....but it seems like most people on the forums are anxiously awaiting for it to come to the E4GT.

I'm talking about an AOSP ICS ROM ported to our phone with all of the important functions working outside of 4G. We will probably see one long before Samsung and Sprint release it officially.

Looks like you got plenty of nice people helping you out on XDA and one even posted what you wanted in one of the threads for you.

I would say there are some good people over there including myself!

No doubt!! I'll tell you though, going through the "WidgetLocker Themes" thread on XDA does not paint a pretty picture of members. I really started customizing with Launcher Pro and WidgetLocker (looking for different sliders) and some of the comments in that thread are downright insensitive and angry. It was surprising.....not everyone can be a pro!!! :)

But yes, I did get some great help over on XDA for my questions. It actually seems like some other people would also like to see a mod to remove the status bar clock as well. Would love to minimize all the gunk on that top bar, and the clock seems to be the most useless since most people run screen widgets anyway. I wish I knew how to do a lot of the stuff those guys can do on XDA....they are very talented, and I bet they love tinkering with technology.

Yeah, when I was researchign phones before the E4GT came out, I read lot of comments form people about how slow and, in some cases nonexistent, future updates are with Samsung. That's disappointing, especially since they are overtaking Apple who seems to update their software every other day.

Do we know why the 4G ability is such a problem on the ROM'ing? I've noticed a few ROMs that don't have it working.

Oh I'm not worried about Samsung updates. Remember that re-writing the firmware for an entirely new operating system version is involved, and they have to do it for a lot of devices. They have to re-write the source so that it works with their hardware, AND add their custom interface and launcher, which complicates the task.

The only ROMs that don't have 4G are not pulled from Samsung's stock Touchwiz ROM base. This includes the AOSP ports of CM7 and MIUI. This is mainly because Samsung does not release the source code for their proprietary WiMax drivers. There are also quite a few different WiMax chipsets out there. The one in our phone is from Toshiba. Anyhoo, getting 4G to work without some source code is, while not impossible, not usually worth the effort of reverse engineering.

Since I started this thread, I figured I would just post my new question in here since it still deals with UnNamed.

I am currenty running UnNamed 2.0.1 on GB 2.3.6, baseband EK02, kernel 2.6.35.7-SPH-D710.EL13-CL806482. I am rooted, and have been denying the OTA update to EL29 based on info I've read that I can't do it unless all I did was root and nothing else (i've flashed a clock removal zip from the status bar). Plus, I've read some horrendously aweful experiences on this phone with the Samsung update.

But now I'm in a pickle, because I found a great B&W theme that I want to run, but it's apparently based of EL29 and I would need to run Calkulin's 2.8.1 ROM to use it. I guess my question is: how do I go back to the point in which I can get rid of UnNamed and flash Calkulin's? If his ROM is EL29-based, and I'm still EK02/EL13, what's the easiest procedure to accmplish this?

Thanks for any help!

First, theme compatibility is determined by the ROM, not the modem. So your EK02 modem doesn't matter, although you may still want to update it by flashing the EL29 modem ZIP in CWM. You can find all the CWM flashable modem files here xda-developers - View Single Post - CWM Modem EG30 - EL29

So, as far as moving to Calkulin's ROM goes, you don't need to go back to anything. What you need to do is format/wipe your data, /system and caches. At the bottom of Calkulin's ROM post is a Wipe All ZIP utility. Put that on your SD card, flash it in CWM and it will perform all of the necessary wipes to install a new ROM.

So here's what you would do ...

1) Download Calk's ROM, the Wipe All ZIP and the theme you want and move them all to your phone
2) Backup your User Apps in Titanium Backup and make any other backups you may want (like SMS message for example)
3) Reboot into CWM
4) Make a Backup of your existing setup in case something goes wrong
5) Install the Wipe All ZIP
6) Install the ROM ZIP
7) Reboot
8) Let everything settle in
9) Reboot back into CWM
10) Manually wipe cache and dalvik cache
11) Install your theme ZIP
12) Reboot
13) Restore User Apps and other backups and reset everything up to your liking

You can flash the modem (if you even care to) at any point in the process. There is nothing wrong with staying on the EK02 modem by the way, but you may find you have better results on a newer modem file. It may be worth your while to try them out. You can always re-flash any modem version.

That's it! Easy peezy!

JayWill, will you do me the honor of marrying me? ...... I could really use an Android expert around the house all the time. I provide three squares a day, and a weekly allowance for personal expenses. :)

Seriously, you are the man! I flashed a zip that playya made that got rid of clock in my status bar....is that mod specific to the ROM or kernel? Can I aslo flash it if I'm on Calk's? Just curious - I love not having it up there.

I'm afraid I'm 7 years into a happy marriage, but thanks for the offer! I have to admit, 3 squares and an allowance sounds mighty tempting! :D

Regarding Playya's clock removal, while there's a very small chance that it would work, it would very likely break one or more of the features in Calkulin's ROM. The file you flashed to remove the clock is not just small clock edits, it's the entire framework of UnNamed, so you'd essentially be flashing the UnNamed framework over Calkulin's framework. Usually not a good idea.

You may want to ask in the Calkulin ROM thread if anyone has considered doing it or would do it as a flashable addon.
