Once again the stock e-mail app stopped displaying the number of unread messages. This happened before, and randomly the messages started displaying again. All the while, the Gmail app always displays the number of unread messages. Anyone know why this happens?

You're talking about the unread count badge, right? From this thread, it sounds like the system app is called Badger--so try going to Settings>Apps, select Badger, and Clear Cache/Clear Data. Now see if the badge shows up again.

I finally figured out how this happens. It must be a bug in the system:

When you group together the stock e-mail app with any other apps to create a folder, the stock e-mail app loses the unread badge count. Strangely the Gmail app still displays the badge count ( as I've sometimes have grouped these apps together to create an "email" folder.)

The fix:
Take the stock e-mail app out of the folder so it's a stand-alone app. Then reboot the phone. The unread badge count returns. This is a strange bug because it doesn't affect the Gmail app.
