I'm in the same boat as you. After reading through threads and asking questions I understand what rooting is. I really honestly tried using the "right" method but I knew I had to be messing something up but couldn't figure it out what it was. I used unrEVOked and I'm not having any issues at all.
I've been flashing ROMs and themes for a little while now. I'm now ready to get into kernels since I've been reading up opn them too.

It's very easy to root your phone using unrevoked's method. They do have an explanation on their website, but the explanation can be somewhat difficult to understand if you are not familiar with the lingo, savvy with the OS and device, or savvy with Linux. The best thing about unrevoked is that it is so user friendly and makes the rooting process appear to be so easy that ANYONE can do it.
This is where the Con is.
Con:
The unrevoked method is enticing to new users and persons interested in root. The method is so simple in fact, someone can root their phone and have no idea what happened. When you root your android device certain changes take place that are vital to the proper functioning of the phone. If the user does not understand these changes and something goes wrong, the risk of them breaking their phone increases exponentially.
While unrevokeds method is seamless, it appears they have not provided a FULL step by step process, which is required to root. Basically they say... download, run, install, and wala! Rooted. That is not the case.
When you root your phone you have to do things in a certain processed order. When you have achieved root, you can test and verify this in a few different ways. All those ways should be tested. Most importantly, you need to perform a nandroid backup, which is common knowledge but, to an unexperienced unrevoked user, they will be non the wiser. Here in lies the problem.
Unrevoked allows unexperienced people to root. Why? Because Android newbie logs on to AC and sees... "One step root process - unrevoked". The member proceeds to root the phone, expecting to have everything at his/her finger tips. When they turn the phone back on, and have to start all over and realize it's not that simple, they flood the forums with questions. Unrevoked leads to less knowledge and more questions. In addition to this, unrevoked does not make it easy to contact them with questions. Why is there no forum on their page? Why is there no further support.
The unrevoked method provides a difficult, meticulous process to be executed in the matter of minutes. While this is extremely convenient, this does not help the newbie. Although we are a community, when you're offline, you're on your own.
It is important for the user to understand what they are doing, understand the lingo and jargon, understand how to undo what they've done, and understand how to protect themselves and their device. Unrevoked does not provide source code information for other developers to analyze to determine what they are doing. These are expensive devices that people choose to alter against rule and agreements, and if something happens while using unrevokeds method, their disclaimer protects them while not helping the user.
It's like leaving a loaded gun on top of the TV. Yes you may have placed it out of the childs reach, but the child WILL still get to it, and their disclaimer protects them from the child hurting themself.
In addition to this, how do you know that unrevoked hasn't inserted any code that will track all the information you send, i/e bank info, passwords, etc. I'm not saying unrevoked is malicious but, we all bore witness to holy men molesting children. With that said, for the most part, we know what we are placing into our phones SD card root.
There are many threads that support other root methods, that have experienced people sifting through code as well as testing and trying these things out to ensure they are good for the community. Unrevoked only has threads about "What now? Am I bricked? How do I undo this? Did I do this right?" Look at unrevoked's website and read the information about their method and when you have a question about a sentence on their page, ask them about it... While you're at it, pretend to not know anything about the android OS, rooting, kernels, roms, flashing, radios, patches, or anything else. The reason I say this is because it appears to everyone that people in that position are the target market for the unrevoked team.
I appreciate the unrevoked team taking the time to develop the easy process, but if they are going to do that, then they should put all their apples in one basket in this instance. Educate your followers, ensure that they know exactly what their doing and provdie support for them. Don't give them pandoras box, tell them to open in, then disappear behind the curtain.

simpleroot is my go to...but i will tell you it was a pain in my a$$ having to root and take 2.2 off the new evo to go back to 2.1 and then rerooting 2.1 with simpleroot messed up the first time because i tried to do it before activating my phone lol...once i activated it i redid the simpleroot process after wiping the phone and now it's perfect...VaelPak on the new evo FTW

I search "how to..." find a thread that has everything I need only to learn that it applies to vX.X and it wont work on my phone. Now I go ahead and research and find everything.
How about the user that is running "Warm apple pie fresh from the oven 2.8" and says, oh unrevoked is one click, i'll download it and install it and be on my way.
Will it work, probably not because the source coding might kick it back saying "cannot unroot version not compatible" or it could, and that device could create a nuclear holocaust where ninjas with chainsaws fall from the sky massacring every one.
I'm just saying...

well, I wouldn't say that's what I admitted...I have no problem keeping up with the advances in technology...Some times i just get careless and miss an important step in the process

I wasn't trying to put you on blast or words in your mouth. Sorry man, I was just trying to prove a point that if you're not meticulous that you could get into hot water pretty easy.
Oh, I'm not mad nor did i take any offense to what you said...
BUT...what if you live in a naturally cold area that doesn't have the proper technology for a heating device...i think "getting in to hot water" would be rather indulging

Wow.. Couldn't have said it better myself. Saved me from typing a really and nasty long rant. I'm glad someone from experience stepped up and is telling people why unrevoked is completely useless... What amuses me is the people that have used unrevoked and so far hasn't had any issues. While I'm honestly VERY happy for them that they haven't had any issue, and I honestly hope they don't, their good experience doesn't negate all the people that have had bad experiences. I'd used this example before and I"ll use it agian.. My friends Toyota Camry didn't turn into a ballistic refrigerator thanks to a faulty pedal.. But a few thousand did. Enough for one of the biggest recalls in the automotive history. So just because my friends and other Camry's didn't doesn't negate that others DID. While some people may not have had any issues with unrevoked it doesn't mean that unrevoked is flawless and everything is all sweet and good. Because that's farthest from the truth. It seems like damn near every day there's a new thread or post about how someone is in hot deep ****, they're clueless of what to do, and sure enough they used unrevoked. I would love to do a poll directed specifically to unrevoked users and ask "what is adb". I'd **** a cheese grater if at least 90% doesn't say no. Now ask that same question to those that used the CORRECT way to root and I'd punch a lion in the face and try to steal its cub if 100% didn't say "yes". It's like truslide said, these people see this easy way out, take it, but in the end have no idea what they just did. And when they have issues they're spinning in circles. I used to own a performance shop. And we'd get all these idiots with Civics that would beg us to put a turbo kit with either a huge turbo, or would want a small turbo but run 15lbs of boost. We wouldn't do it because it's stupid. What would happen? They'd go to another shop.. spend 2500 .. then two weeks later spend another 2500 buying a new motor because their connecting rod is on their lap. Making horsepower is easy as hell. Making reliable and correct horsepower is a totally different subject. Rooting your $500 phone can be really easy with unrevoked. But rooting it reliably, and correctly is a totally different subject, or thread if you want to be technical. Yes you will have some people that'll never have a problem. That's awesome. Just like I've seen some people manage to run as high as 18lbs of boost on a bone stock B18 (Acura Integra motor) But that doesn't mean it's the smart or the right thing to do. Playing Russian Roulette with your car or in this car your $500 phone is completely stupid and that's exactly what you do when you use unrevoked. Those from unrevoked need to step up and start taking responsibility for their work and more importantly the consequences of their work. Until then, they can gft....
