I had the shutting down issue at night. Got the load monitor app from the market and no no more shutting down issues for a couple weeks. Then I rooted cognition 2.2 onto my phone the day before yesterday. The phone has now started to shut down like crazy.

If I flash back to stock, will AT&T notice?

Doubtful, but reflashing back to JF6 will get rid of your shutdown issue.

I doubt they'd notice, no. When I returned mine, they didn't check to see whether it was rooted or not.. heck they didn't even turn it on.

For what it's worth:
When I swapped out my captivate for a new one in August at a corporate store, the guy helping me said they (store employees) couldn't tell if a phone had been rooted or not. He did mention that the tech people who they send the phones to can tell. Is this really true? I don't know. Would this inspire me to unroot a phone and turn it back to stock before returning it? Yes.
I don't want any unexpected surprises on my bill that I have to hassle at&t over.

This might be a stupid question. But I'm assuming you're meaning flashing it back to stock and that's what JF6 is?

Jf6 was the version of eclair 2.1 that was on the phone when you probably got it. Unless you got it recently and Samsung may be shipping devices with a newer OS JH7. I don't know for sure.

I did mean to flash it back to stock Eclair 2.1 to see if that would get rid of your issue.

I specifically asked Samsung support if rooting my Captivate would void my warranty. Here's the chat transcript:

Alice : Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Greg: Does rooting my Captivate void my warranty?
Alice : Yes, the warranty is void if the handset is dismantled or opened.
Greg: rooting is done via software
Alice : I understand your concern.
Alice : You are trying to flash the handset, am I correct?
Greg: no, but does that void the warranty?
Alice : May I know exactly what software you are trying to apply/install/root on the handset?
Greg: nothing in particular at this moment.
Alice : As the software on your handset is pre installed and only updates available for download.
Alice : The rooting may corrupt the software on it.
Alice : Hence, this is not recommended.
Greg: So it doesn't actually void the warranty then?
Alice : Would you mind holding a few minutes while I gather the required information on your request?
Greg: sure. thanks.
Alice : Thank you for holding.
Alice : The warranty is void only if its a physical damage and if tampered.
