Upcoming HTC update w/ Froyo to improve Battery Life??

First of all, you comment on this as if it's just an issue with the Droid Incredible. It isn't; nearly all modern smartphones (or, to use Google's buzzword, "superphones") have this. They all can last about a day, but not much more with the stock battery.

That's just the problem; battery technology hasn't kept pace with the demand phones have. Just today, I was playing with a computer with lower specs than my Incredible; it was 12 years old, and huge. It was a desktop, so it was obviously plugged into the wall. I think we've come a long way to be able to power a device with similar (or better!) specs that fits in the palm of your hand, even if it for just ~10 hours.

Generally speaking though, I noticed that those who applied the leaked OTA update mentioned noticeably better battery life. Will that be included in the coming update? I assume so.

Yes it is a problem. We demand super thin phones with big processors and huge screens.
That is what the market research says we want to buy.
I wonder when somejuan will make a phone that is 3mm thicker and put in a bigger battery?

Isn't that basically the DInc with the extended life battery?

The 1500/1750 batteries add no width.
The 2150 adds about 1.5-2mm to the width.
The 3500 adds about 3-4mm to the width.

So yes lol the Inc with an extended battery fits that description fairly decently! I kind of wish they would start offer a dual offer when you buy the phone. $199 with small battery or $249 with an Extended battery and back. I would opt for the slightly bigger phone for 2-3 times+ the battery life! Especially if I didn't have to wait for a separate delivery! (I think the next set of phones need to have the batteries ready at launch, if the do I'm ordering one from the start!)

Yeah I agree, that's one of the main things I want when a phone gets released. I think they should get everything ready at launch, all the cases, accessories, docks, batteries etc. so that I can be ready when I buy it. I would rather wait another month for a phone that has all the accessories already being made for it for release than buy a phone and have to wait a month or more for an extended battery.

But then again, a month in the techworld is like a year in normal life.

"Look I just got an extended battery for my Incredible!!!" "Look, I have a Fascinate." "Oh :("

I have the 2150 battery as well as the Juice Defender app. Juice defender is set to keep the 3G and wifi radios turned off and then to turn them on for 1 minute every 15 minutes to check mail and stuff. 3G is always on if the screen is on, and wifi only comes on if you're in proximity to a known wifi network. I also have it set to go into airplane mode from 1am-6am. The app has a nightmarishly confusing interface, but if you're willing to play with it for half an hour, you'll double or triple your battery life easily.

I had the same phone. But compairing:

Storm:
Qualcomm dual core ARM11 400MHz/ARM 9 279Mhz
196MB ROM
128MB RAM (Out of which we had very little of that to actually use for anything!)
No internal Storage
Low Res Screen (480x360 TFT)
3.2MP Camera single flash

to

Incredible:
Qualcomm SnapDragon 1000MHz
512MB ROM (We get to use it all)
8GB Internal Storage (We have 6.6GB usable)
Hi-Res Screen (800 x 480 AMOLED)
8MP Camera dual LED flash

Is far from not comparing apple to apples. That like comparing an Apple to the whole tree. The BB Storm if you take out all the data crap and just play a similar game has almost 2/3's less processor. So actually if your storm got 2 days and you Inc. gets only one technically it's an improvement. Not to mention all the other stuff.

Bottom line is battery tech isn't keeping up to consumer demands. We want faster longer lasting devices. They can give them, but we also want them smaller.....well they can't pack a huge battery into a smaller case....yet.

So will we see a battery life increase out of Froyo? Yes. Why? JIT makes the processor fit in twice the calculations per clock making the phone more efficient. Will it be drastic? Don't count on it. I think most guys who have tested and really looked into the battery issue have determined that the phone quits running off of wall power once it reaches a 100% charge. And if your phone is still on depending on what you have running, you will see it update and show 93-95% power after a few minutes. If this is so it is a hardware issue, that is timed by software. Will they fix it? I hope so.

Excellent response. Thanks!
