Update 4.4.2 stock messaging app, no notifications, error message

Since the upload, I don't get notifications on the stock messages app. Sometimes when I get a text an error message pops up saying "unfortunately messages has stopped" (I thoroughly went through all notification settings by the way)

I get the same message. I got tired of it and I switched to Hangouts. It handles my SMS just fine and notifications work. I recently switched back to the stock messenger to give it another try and i'm still getting the same issues. Have you had any luck with fixing it?
