Update 5.9.901?

Re: Update 5.9.901???

In reality, that's a load. You made the choices to go the way that you did. No one held a gun to your head, no one forced you to do a thing. Take a little responsibility. Moto certainly could have done a quicker job of updating the phone, but to use that as an excuse for your choice is bottom drawer crap.

Strong words! Each to his/her own. I took the responsibility and I stand on my own and stand by my opinion. Corporations do things for one reason - money. That's the story here as well.

Good Luck,
RMD

Re: Update 5.9.901???

You guys do not necessarily have to do anything unethical.. For example while droidth3ory was building his razr rom before they had a recovery image, whenever he bricked it he went to his vzw store and they plugged it into their machine which completely restores it to stock, I believe. Obviously he has a very good relationship with them. But it could be worth a shot just going and asking.. I mean it certainly couldn't hurt to try at this point right? Just an idea..

Absolutely. Worth a shot. I'm going to hold off for a bit cause I'm not having any issues pressing me to update right now. Honestly, I consider where I'm at the sweet spot....no data issues, camera rockin', rooted...except for the fact that I'm stuck on the kernel. If I took it in and they were able to restore it back to stock, then I'd lose root most likely. I'd like to see if they leak an update that puts us back on track, first. Then there's a fighting chance to keep root. I mean, they leaked a full signed update for 5.7.893, so, it's not impossible that they'd leak one that brings us up to current OTA.

Re: Update 5.9.901???

Heck you could probably go into verizon and tell them the truth, that you cannot load an update to your phone, it keeps failing, (just omit the part where it was your fault that you cant) and they very well could restore your phone to stock. Most of the reps if they even know about things like this, probably dont care/think of it, and simply want to get you, a customer with a problem that isnt going to earn them commission, taken care of as quickly as possible, so they can move on to someone who wants to get a new phone.

Re: Update 5.9.901???

Back on topic-

Has anyone downloaded the update from Droid Life?
Anything notable or bad with the experience?

Re: Update 5.9.901???

I have the .901 now coming from .893.

Biggest thing I notice so far is the radio.
In my office in the basement of the building I work in I am on the edge of 3g/4g.
Before the update, it would cycle between no bars 4g and full bars 3g. I would have to keep the setting on 3g all the time down here.
After the update I changed the setting back to 3g/4g and it stays on 3g all by itself now and when I go upstairs 4g takes over with no hiccups.
I come back downstairs and 3g will come back faster than it ever used to. It still is a little rough on the 4g to 3g but I haven't had more than 30 seconds downtime nor have I had to cycle airplane mode.

Other than that, nothing seems to be different minus the couple new bloat apps.

MOG Music and Emergency Alert are the ones I notice off the bat. Don't know if I am missing anymore.

Re: Update 5.9.901???

I have downloaded the 5.9.901 update and have installed it over the non-rooted .893 update from a couple days ago. After the .893 update I still had lots of problems with the radio dropping, system reboots, and poor battery life (even with only 3G enabled). So far those issues seemed to have gone away. My phone is also currently feeling a bit snappier as well. I'll watch the battery life tonight and see how it is now also.

Update: Completely unscientific... but with my normal use patterns this afternoon on 3G with push from exchange, gmail, and twitter as well as lots of texts and web browsing my battery is only down 60% from full charge in 6 hrs. Usually I would be at 40% at this point. So estimated 20% improvement. Photos at bottom.

Here are some photos of the upgrade in progress:

Re: Update 5.9.901???

I tried seeing if the update is available for me to download and I get a message that "check for updates is not available at this time". Does this mean that the server is too busy with other people downloading or is there some other issue? (I have 893 installed on a non rooted Bionic).

Re: Update 5.9.901???

How do we know if we are on the update path? I recently flashed back to stock that gave me forever root because I deleted bloatware and couldn't install the last OTA. I did not ever download any leaked updates. Am I still able to get this OTA?

Re: Update 5.9.901???

I updated my bionic to 5.5.893 via OTA unrooted. I then re-rooted my phone using the 1 click method. I checked my phone 5 minutes ago for this new update but it says its already up to date with 5.5.893. Do i have to unroot again to see the update?

You need to have everything on stock 5.5.893 in order to flash the 5.9.901 update. Since you haven't taken any leaks, with some work you can fix your issue and get this to work. Since you flashed back to stock, you just need to apply 5.5.893 if you haven't, and then apply 5.9.901. Don't mess with bloat until you make a backup! :)

No. It seems to be being pushed to a small minority of people so far. You can either grab the file posted earlier and flash it manually or wait til it shows up for you.

I'm already on 5.9.893 rooted. It was the official OTA.

Errrr, I'm guessing that's a typo. There is no 5.9.893. The official OTA is 5.5.893. If you have that, and are forever rooted, make a nandroid backup and have at the 5.9.901 update if you wish to install it. That should keep root and give you the new kernel, system, and radio. And hey, MORE APPS! :D
