Update Ate Up Most Of My Space!

Out of nowhere (I actually thought I had automatic updates turned off but apparently not) I woke up a few mornings ago and several things were different about my phone, so an update had obviously been made. Most of the changes are fairly neutral. The Google Photos now has headings for the beginning of every month, things like that. Whatever.

But the most significant difference, unfortunately, is a pretty big negative, in that I now have a storage problem that I didn't have before. It's a little bit confusing, actually, as I actually started running out of space a few months ago and then put in a new SD card as secondary storage. I honestly don't remember the distribution of space before the update, but that fact is that now BOTH are basically filled to capacity.

The space is clearly much more valuable to me than whatever benefits I get from the update. I think I know the answer, but there isn't any way to undo the update, is there? I kind of almost feel like that space (which I paid for, of course) was basically stolen from me.

It would seem more likely to be a software/firmware issue, which is why I would still consider the factory reset. Unfortunately, there's no other good option to try to clear up this kind of thing on Moto phones, since you can't wipe the cache partition.

Okay, the last thing (probably) I'll say about this, though, is that it kind of raises a bigger issue as far as I'm concerned, and that is that my system was significantly damaged without my having done anything wrong, which I think is kind of scary. I mean, it's not like I did something stupid like downloading something I shouldn't have or dropping the device (which, okay, would be a hardware issue). I basically just woke up one morning with a damaged phone and the need to start all over again. That just shouldn't happen!

Sometimes glitches can happen -- either the update process itself was glitchy, or the update itself was coded poorly. Since there haven't been widespread reports of similar issues with the G6, I'd guess it was a problem with the update, or just something getting corrupt on the phone.

Now that I re-read your posts, it really doesn't make sense that your phone would've gotten any official update, since it's 3 going on 4 years old, and Moto doesn't support their phones for that long with updates. So it seems more likely that something is just getting corrupt.

Well, clearly some changes were made, though, that certainly look like updates. In the Photos app, for example, now I can scroll down by the month (that is, it skips to the first of every month). Even in the phone app itself, the little keyboard icon that allows me to type in a number looks different. Obviously, these are minor, superficial changes, but, again, do seem to be indicative of updates.

But, whatever, either way, my phone was operating perfectly smoothly and now is no longer doing so!

Updates to apps are not the same as system updates. Many app developers will do a major refresh of the app's interface or features with some regularity (and Google is notorious for doing this) -- but these are simply updates to the apps, not to the system. If you saw differences in how system components looked (like system settings menus, or the notification panel), that would suggest a major system update.
