If there is trouble transferring the file by USB to the SD card, you can just take it out from behind the battery and use a card reader to put it in the root of the SD card.

fyi I'm following this as if it's a news story unfolding in front of me. I kind of messed up my phone trying to root and am trying to get it at least back to stock for the time being.

No problem! I know how U feel I've been without a phone for 2days :\ trying to get it back to working condition.

I back up and running! Thank god... The link that thefredelement posted worked excellent. Thank you so much! I will be trying to root again soon, but may take a more step by step approach than using the all in one click rooter, that way i can figure out where a step goes wrong. thanks

Just so anyone in my exact situation can figure it out, this is what happened. I was rooting using the auto root method :[ROOT] ~~~ HTC EVO - Universal Auto Root ~~~ v2.3 (works with all version)(2/13/11) - xda-developers and then my phone froze on step 7. So I had S-off, the stock recovery, and no other software loaded. I had to get S back on, so I needed a custom recovery and used Amon-ra recovery listed here: public:forever [RootWiki] I then followed the instructions step by step using the link that thefredelement posted here: Index of /evo/stock/ruu/

Hopefully that makes sense, and if it seems that there was a step I didn't need then let me know! But otherwise it works now!

Yes. When booting into the stock recovery it automatically asked if I wanted to flash. You need to make sure you rename the file though to exactly as it says.

I just downloaded the RUU zip file and I can open it with 7zip, but not with Windows explorer (if that's what you mean).

I would make sure it downloaded properly by checking the MD5 before you attempt to install it.

what is 7zip? sorry for the noob questions:-\ ?

OK, copy that PC36IMG.zip file from your computer on to the root of the SD card.

Example, if your SD card shows up as drive H, the path looks like this:
H:\PC36IMG.zip

Once that is on the SD card, re-install the SD card into your EVO, and re-install the battery.

Next, power up the phone to HBoot, using the Power+Vol Down method.

Your phone will take a minute and will scan that PC36IMG file (there is a blue vertical progress bar at the top right of your screen). Then it should ask you if you want to install that file:

Do you want to start update?
<VOL UP> Yes
<VOL DOWN> No

Select "Yes" with VOL UP and you should start on your way to having the stock ROM.

7zip is just a free zip utility. I generally prefer it to the built in zip reader in Windows explorer because I'm old and remember when you needed a separate zip utility. :p It also will open RAR files (which is nice). You don't need it for this, but a quick Google search should show you where to download it if you want it anyway.

don't open PC36IMG.zip files!! but the post 2 posts above this one is 100% correct on the method of installing it.

You can get the zip file from the same location And erase the file named PC36IMG.zip that is on your sdcard right now. Download the new file, rename it PC36IMG.zip and put it on your sdcard. Then flash it from the bootloader, like the original part you were stuck at.

okay I erased the PC36IMG file and there is a PC36IMG-mr leave that on the sd card?

Yeah that's fine to leave there for now the phone won't scan it.

Just erase the first one, then put the new one you got from the link on the card.
