Do anyone know if US Cellular will be getting the 2.2 update if so please let me know. I'm new to this smartphone stuff and have no clue. How will I know that I can update and how do I update? Thanks please help me out.

Confirmed

HTC Desire from U.S. Cellular will get the 2.2 Froyo update. Users will be able to download the update from u.s. cellular.com or come to a store with a service technician to have the update install for them.

My response

This is the response I received on Sep 24

I appreciate you taking the time to write to us about an Android 2.2 update. At this time we do not have a definite date as to when a update for the HTC Desire will be available. It is our understanding that Android 2.2 will not be released by Android until October. I hope this information is helpful. Congratulations on your new HTC Desire.

If they can't even provide the ETA - i don't think it's going to happen any time soon.. What a bunch of BS, honestly

Root your phone. Quit worrying bout all the update nonsense. updates are great and all but when ur rooted you can flash custom roms and they are WAAAAYYY ahead of any official update and the performance of your device will far exceed any official update.

2.2 is still in testing with HTC for uscc but should be finished in a few weeks. Then it will need tested by uscc then it will be released. Uscc is notorious for long testing periods but they seem to really pushing Android devices so I think by Christmas is a reasonable estimate. Point being though is that they're not just sitting on it to be difficult.

Would Alltel also be in that regional carriers, or is that just going to be for US Cellular? I have Alltel, and the Desire but have yet to hear about an update to Froyo.

Yes, Alltel is included in that list. My carrier got the Froyo RUU this week for final testing/verification. Everything is working except MMS, but that shouldn't take long to fix. I did get to play around with it some, and Froyo Sense is pretty sweet. However, the Ultimate Droid Rom I am running is also pretty sweet. I expect to see the update pushed out no later than next week.

Is there any news on this? As an Alltel Desire user I am desperate for news.

Anyone have a .zip file for the USCellular update? I have a friend who's roaming with a mac and therefore can't apply the update via the .exe file.

You can get froyo at the u s cellular web site. Go to phones-smartphones-android-softwareupdates. The problem is it will delete your contacts, calendar entries, widgers, and downloaded apps.

Went to USC store yesterday and they did mine. Loading contacts now. I have only had it a week so didn't have much on it.

So is it really worth it then? I've had my phone for 5 months, have a lot of apps w/a lot of data in them. Not sure if it'd be worth it to lose all of that plus contacts just for the 2.2 update. What's so great about 2.2?

It does have some improvements. The biggest are 10.1 flash player and app2sd. It also has wi-fi hotspot capabilities (with tethering plan) and better support for microsoft exchange. I haven't noticed a significant difference but it's supposed to increase browser speed.

If you've synced your phone with a google account you should be able to retrieve your calendar and contacts (if they're saved to your google account). As far as your downloaded apps go, you might check the settings of them. Many actually give you an option to save info to your sd card or online.
