I ordered an Essential phone today (it's so darn cheap for the nova gray) so I had an android device to go along with my iPhone because I'm a gadget geek and I like to keep up on all platforms. I don't plan on using a carrier plan on it, only wifi or tethered to my iPhone. Do I need to have a SIM card from a carrier to get the Android Pie update? (my iPhone is Verizon so can't "borrow" that one).
I tried to search for this but I didn't see a straightforward answer, it seems like the carriers push out the updates?
