Update Won't Be Ready for Another 30-60 Days

At this point I would rather a tiered patch go out. The most serious problem is the data connection loss.

Exactly right. Fix the most glaring problems that cause loss of functionality. Release minor update patches after that for the fixes that haven't yet been tested.

IMO the problem with Motorola not releasing the update ASAP is that now every single person with any tech knowledge will use the Easy upgrade to 5.7.893 method detailed on xda and start running unsupported versions just to have a working phone.

Motorola should be ashamed of themselves for allowing a phone with this much dev time to be released with all of these issues and then to not have a timely release to fix them.

You ain't kidding. On both points. I'm tempted to go that route myself just because the data issue caused me a lot of grief yesterday. That was part of the reason I was so frustrated. (The quick version of the story is that I was driving a few hours away and because the phone lost data connectivity, the navigation didn't update the traffic info.) This is also why I say that if this is the support we're going to see from official channels, I'm happy to go back to CM7 once it's released for Bionic and stay on custom roms. I did with my OG Droid and have no issue doing so with the Bionic once they've matured enough.

I've already had to pull my battery twice today. Once while I was driving! At what point is it safe to consider this device not regularly functional for basic purposes?? Both times was during loss of cell/data signal.

They should fix that issue FIRST!! Another 30 - 60 days of this nonsense???

I've given up waiting. I've rooted it and am in the process of trying to get the updated kernel, baseband, and rom installed. So far I'm not doing so well with that process, but, I'm working on it.

Ok tinfoil hat time.

What do you think the chances are that they said late October to Early November just to push early adopters out of their return window? Seriously, if they had said they would have it fixed between the first and last of December how many people would have returned their phone and waited on the RAZR or Nexus?

WOA! I hadn't seen that one. Thank you! I was going nuts cause I couldn't get cheesecake to show me any updates to download. That rocks!!

Lol no problem :)

Cheesecake is currently not working I think because Moto is doing a soak test of some sort to their testers, so the servers cheesecake checks are down.

A few months ago I'd have never believed that. Sadly, I've become more cynical as time goes on...Not saying that's true, but, I at least am willing to believe it's possible.

That would explain quite a bit. Sadly I already flashed back to stock and re-rooted so I have a lot of set up to do once this is done. sigh :)

Its fine you would have had to anyway... I've become quite good at re-setting up everything after wiping. I kind of look forward to a new ROM version so I can wipe everything and get a fresh start... whereas just a few weeks ago I dreaded having to restore everything. lol :)

EDIT: DON"T FORGET YOU'RE FOREVERROOT AFTER FLASHING BACK AND REROOTING :)

Don't you worry about forever root. That's the process I used to go back to stock. :) I just finished running the update in stock recovery and it's rebooting. I haven't yet installed titanium backup so I don't have any of my apps or data backed up. Oh well. :) I can get my angry birds data off my Xoom so no big deal. :D A clean start on this big of an update isn't a bad thing anyway IMO. This should definitely improve things for me. Again, really appreciate it.

Glad to be helpful :) Just pay it forward next time you see someone starting out who needs help

Always do. :) I'm not as involved in the android world as I am in other circles, but, when I can answer people's questions I definitely do.

I've been considering rooting.

I WAS putting it off until the first update, but, since I don't see the first update being released any time soon, I figured now was the time. Honestly if you're going to do it, I *HIGHLY* recommend that you do the following:

1) Install Forever Root
2) Install Clockwork Recovery
3) *BACKUP YOUR ROM AS IS*

Do that before going any further. That way, if you choose to, you can unroot it and be back to where you were before root was installed, thus allowing you to change your mind. After doing the backup, go hog wild. :)

The chances are very good.

You're exactly right! I thought the same thing earlier today.

Pro tip for anyone considering rooting and installing the leaked update. I haven't used Titanium Backup in a while so I was unaware of this insanely awesome new feature. So if you follow my advice above to do a CWR backup after you root, if you decide to do a clean install of the update (wiping data and cache), you can restore selected apps and data from you CWR backup using Titanium Backup Pro. NICE! I should have rooted before. I feel like we're closer to getting the OG Droid experience back. Once CM7 is fully cooked, I'm there for sure.
