Update? Yeah right, we were lied to.

Talking about all updates in general, why do the updates have to go through ATT? Can't HTC release the updates themselves to us?

Got mine in Plano, Texas bout 2 days ago...Dont kill me here, but I dont see a point in this update. I'd rather have my phone protected than have a few more cooler games...

The system updates, like the one enabling HSUPA and the upcoming Gingerbread update, come from HTC. This was a minor patch, but in hindsight probably would have been better handled by HTC.

I got my inspire Tuesday from best buy, I had been waiting all week for this update. out of frustration I decided to download the amazon appstore just to see what would happen. I was surprised to see that it installed the appstore and everything that i installed from there no problem. Thing is I still don't have the allow nonmarket apps option in my menu.

So then why can't HTC release it? does it have to go through ATT first? After all HTC is the one who made the phone and are making all these updates.

Wrong, ATT has mandated all issues that have required updates (4G radios not fully active, Unknown Sources choice unavailable), so any update fixing those would have to go through ATT, and since this is a OTA update it has to go through ATT's network.

So then what about the Gingebread update coming out in a couple months. Will that be going through HTC or ATT?

Both. HTC will ensure it works on Inspires while ATT will check it doesn't do anything "weird" with the network, once it has both companies approval, it will be pushed out, probably by HTC WiFi.
