I just went from 2.2 back to 2.1-update1 and I went to check for an update, It brought up a blue screen and downloaded something, restarted it self, then when to a plain white screen and started to download again.

it got to 50% and said "failed" and then restarted again and notified me that it was a invalid update. I have to wait another 24 hours. lol

any one else?

Mine did something similar. I have 2.1 and got a text saying I was going to get an update and to click ok when it appeared.
I did, but it immediately said restarting in five seconds and when it restarted, it said invalid or incomplete (can't remember which) download and that no changes or updates were made.
When I searched for an update from the phones settings menu, it said none available.

We're never getting the update. Don't you people understand that? ;)

Yes, in fact we are...

Galaxy S Vibrant

Captivate specifically mentioned for "later in December" -- via Kies.

UPDATE -- the link is for Canadian users, I guess there's no telling when it will trickle down to the US :-(

And see, there are two issues to address right there.
Captivate users in the US were already supposed to have gotten an update in November. That was the date specified by Samsung.
At this time, Europe/Canada can rely on getting their updates on time.
In the US it's become a real problem.
AT&T in this case is creating the bottleneck here.

I'm a bit irritated that the Galaxy Tablet is out with the 2.2 OS through AT&T and that Google Nexus S is out with Gingerbread, so now the Captivate is 2 versions behind the latest formally released version. Does anyone have any reliable news from a good AT&T source about Captivate update to FroYo?

I don't think AT&T is the problem...or at least the Whole problem.

The other Galaxy S phones have been very slow to update as well.

Furthermore, Captivate users were actually originally supposed to get the update in SEPTEMBER, not November.

Also, since they typically confirm the update about a month ahead, my current guess is we MIGHT have it in February.

Why give an update when they figure we will give up and spring for a new phone. Plus I'm sure you'll be able to get a cappy for free or 99? if you buy a new phone and reup your contract.
They are all bunch of scumbags at all these companies. Only problem we keep letting them do it. Just like if everyone stopped buying apps due to the 15 min time, they would stop that nonsense. Still we put up with it and they keep screwing us.

Too true.

The manufacturer doesn't support it's product because a new, better one will be offered tomorrow, give or take a day... and everyone will want that one irregardless of any problems they've had. I had three phones for 11 years problem free. Now on my second in two years and I'm certain that it'll be three in three years.

Sure the phone companies can be blamed for charging an exorbitant amount for what they actually provide. And while they really shouldn't be blamed for the manufacturers "throw away" devices having problems, they rub salt in the wound by charging you to end a contract early and then turn around and charge you an activation fee for a new phone and contract.

Updates are pointless after a couple of months. Advancements in technology are so quick that the next new (enter your device of choice here) has already been updated with the update higher than the one you want. (we all cry about getting the official froyo and now we are seeing gingerbread thrown around)

Big companies just get bigger.
must be nice.......

If that's the way it's really going down

and AT&T is engaged in planned obselecence and deliberately impeding the progress of the Captivate or other Android phones by skipping OS updates then I'm done with them. Not just because of the principle, but because we were basically lied to. I was under the distinct impression these phones were getting their updates because of what was told to us and widely reported shortly after these phones released.

Initially, I knew I could have avoided it by going for a Nexus One and picking whatever carrier I wanted, but because the Nexus One was gone and Google stupidly refused to say anything about an upcoming model I was kind of forced to buy into this bull$4!t AT&T game.

Now I'm just looking like a damn fool with stale eclair on my face.

wow...couldn't have said it any better...damn near word for word even......

I'll be honest, this is part of what is making me miss my iPhone and Apple's BS lockdowns. At least they came through on their words with updates and refinements.

I'm really hoping Winmo picks up the reigns. I loved my old Winmo 5 and 6 phones for reliability and stability. If Winmo7 turns out as good as I think and hope it will, the Cap will be my last Android device until things get straight.

Honestly, I can't even blame Google. It's a combination of the manufacturers and the carriers. they are turning Android into this bastardized feature-phone OS and killing the whole thing.

Given the fact that the Captivate is the only Android phone w/ 1Ghz processor that AT&T offers and they have said we'd get the Froyo update I think it's just a waiting game and I'm not convinced it's entirely AT&T's doing.

As someone else mentioned all of the Galaxy S phones are delayed in getting the update.

Obviously because of the IPhone exclusivity AT&T has enjoyed they've treated Android like a bastard stepchild and given Android's popularity and the fact Verizon is supposed to get the IPhone unless AT&T bet all their chips on Windows 7 they are going to have to get with the Android program.

I think Samsung bears some of the blame in not getting the update out. I may be wrong but I really don't think AT&T expects us to buy new phones (which of course they don't even yet offer) to get Froyo or Gingerbread. Given that the Captivate is only about six months old and that just about everyone signed either a two year extension or a new 2 year contract to get one I just don't see AT&T not updating them this soon after the intro.

When you consider the number of Android choices available on other carriers I don't think AT&T is stupid enough to give their Android customers a solid reason to switch carriers. It's not as if Android is a flash in the pan and I think AT&T is fully aware of that.

AT&T is that stupid. I was a dealer with them for over 15 years. They have such a closed mentality to change if it effects there bottom line. They have cobbled back together most of what was Ma Bell back in the day now and thats the only focus they have had since the government split them up. They dont like to change and it shows in everything and every product they offer. They dont like not being in control, which to me says Android scares them silly because its so open. If we get Froyo at this point I hate to say its gonna have its nuts removed because they are afraid of its features that replace there paid apps and such. The New FCC stuff also makes me think AT&T are waiting to give it to us so they can legally charge for all services, but call me a cynic. When our companies contracts come due next year we are out of AT&T

So how does that bode for Apple and Winmo? Neither company will let AT&T near the devices, which is why they aren't saddled with the bloatware Android phones are.

I think the major adoption of the Android phones through all carriers is because it is so open. They can load it how they see fit, and lock it down with their proprietary garbage. They can't do this with Apple and Winmo.

Apple can get away with it because, AT&T dont want to invest in setting up programs for Apple, and why should they 500,000+ apps out there already. Apple keeps such a short leash on there product that its no threat to AT&T except for the network they never upgrade. WinMo has been a bit of a joke. Its windows on a phone. Its not like ATT doesnt have a few hundred Windows engineers on the payroll. Plus MS is as greedy as ATT, meaning if they cant figure a way to make you pay them for a feature or make it so you can only do something thru there software they just wont put it in, unless forced to. (Win 7, home, pro or ultimate for example). I am beginning to think Captivate is a fluke for ATT to even carry. I bought it because I needed a phone to run some apps that Apple wouldnt for business. BUT I need 2.2 for most of the programs to work properly. Bought mine shortly after release and was told 2.2 would be out very soon so it would work out fine. Well..... here I sit S**T in one hand and ATT in the other, or maybe I have S**T in both hands now. :p

just chatted with an online agent at the Samsung web site and was told by "Arthur" that there is no update out and they will not comment on when/if there are to be any software updates do to the fact that it would lead to inaccuracies. lol i guess they gave up on it and are deciding if they will release it or the newest Gingerbread 2.3 instead!! this is GAY!!!
