[UPDATED 12/30/2012][Sprint Only]UnRoot and Return to stock

Not sure why this worked but, as a last resort, I used Odin to download the tar without the phone being in download mode. That brought it somewhat back to life (lots of errors as it was booting) so I got into recovery mode and did a factory wipe/restore and now everything is good.
For the sake of clarity and getting my phone out of its bricked state.... when you say you weren't in download mode... what mode were you in? was the phone just on?

**UPDATE** Got it working. word of advice DON'T USE OFF BRAND USB CABLES. lol head hung in shame!!

I hate to say this, but i'm in the same situation right now :-(. Odin started to hang in the same place "system.img.ext4" so I unplugged, did a battery pull to get out of download mode. It bricked my phone into a kies recovery mode request, so i fixed that and finally got into recovery mode and did a factory reset and cache wipe. However it's still hanging there :-( any suggestions? My whole reason for this is to try and fix the "no sim error" that i've been ignoring for months.

Re: UnRoot and Return to stock

After rooting with your files on my s3 sprint 4.1.2, the phone becomes inoperable after a few days. I really just want to root to change the feature.xml and delete the otc update files. Is there away to do this and unroot without replacing back to the sprint rom?

Re: UnRoot and Return to stock

I did a whole mess of stuff today that I'm not happy with and after flashing the stock GS3 rom from Clockwork, I'm now stuck with the following info on my screen:

Odin Mode
Product name: SPH-L710
Custom Binary Download: Yes (2 count)
Current Binary: Custom
System Status: Custom
Qualcomm Secureboot: Enable

Downloading...
Do not turn off target!!

When I run Odin on my comp, I don't see anything in the ID:COM box. I'm really hoping that it's me doing something stupid. Please help because my phone is currently non-functioning. Thank you!!!

Darth:

This root procedure shouldn't do anything that affects stability at all, unless you changed something after rooting that affects stability. All it does is allow access to files and functions that you wouldn't otherwise have access to. It doesn't change how any files run. Did you change anything other than feature.xml, and what changes did you make to that file?

SuperSU has an option in settings to "Full unroot." I'm not sure exactly what it does, but I'm pretty sure it won't reflash the ROM. Make sure you run Triangle Away first, to reset the flash counter to zero.

Re: UnRoot and Return to stock

Dimak:

You say this happened AFTER you flashed the stock ROM, right? So you were able to connect to Odin previously? If yes, did the flash of the stock ROM complete sucessfully? If so:

As long as you're not actually transferring data from the PC, you can disconnect even though the screen says not to. I would suggest holding down the power button until the phone shuts off, then disconnect the USB cable and see if the phone will boot normally.

Just to make sure we're not missing anything: You do have the Samsung drivers installed, right? If you connect the phone normally (not in download mode, Odin not running) does the PC recognize your phone?

If so,when you're running Odin, make sure you start Odin on the PC and enter download mode on the phone first, and then plug in the cable. If that's not it, try using a different USB port (use one on the PC, not a USB hub), and a different cable. Odin is very sensitive to connection quality.

Re: UnRoot and Return to stock

Well, in my panic, I found a solution. First of all, Odin wouldn't recognize my device. Re-installing the device drivers was what fixed that problem. Then once it recognized it, I flashed the stock ROM for GS3 and it booted but still asked for that darn password.

What finally worked was doing a factory reset using Odin. It's ridiculous because I had done the factory reset using ClockWork, deleted all my caches, and that didn't work. Doing the factory reset from the Odin menu though did the trick.

Meyerweb, thanks for the tips. I only saw this after the fact but I love how responsive this entire community is!

Re: UnRoot and Return to stock

Glad you got it working. And thanks for posting what you learned. That's how we all get more knowledgeable.

Re: UnRoot and Return to stock

I had a rooted S3 on 4.2.1 which was having all sorts of issues including not being able to update. I just used this method to flash it back to the stock, and now it hardly works at all. It won't connect to Kies, I gives me multiple popups of whats not working constantly and I can't navigate it.

Re: UnRoot and Return to stock

Have a serious issue. I can get into download mode but I cant get into the phone to run triangle away and when go into download mode I see it says custom 1. i need to reset it to send back to sprint.
The reason i cant get into the phone is because it boots up normal and then powers downs because it claims it has 0% on battery even though it is fully charged. i tried a different battery to no avail.
I t runs fine in recovery mode or download mode on the battery.
Can i flash an older rom for ex; if i have 4.2 can i flash 4.04?
Also it wont mount the sd card so odin is the only thing i can do.

Is your S3 a Sprint phone? I've run this procedure multiple times, and had no issues. If you haven't already, do a factory reset in recovery. If that doesn't work, I'd redownload the ROM file, in case the download was corrupted, and then reinstall it through Odin.

Yes, you can flash an older ROM as long as you don't try to go from 4.3 to an earlier version. The ROM tar file linked in this thread is actually an ICS ROM, so it will take you to an older version. That won't solve your flash counter problem, though. If you flash a ROM in Odin with the flash counter set at 1, it will stay at 1.

Is your phone still under Samsung's warranty? I ask because many people report that Sprint doesn't seem to care if your phone has been rooted. Samsung, OTOH, definitely does.

Yes I managed to get the counter to reset I first flashed a stock but rooted rom. them flashed back a custom recovery then flashed the one file unroot remove counter which worked. now i got to send it back.

was running a Wicked rom and needed to go back to stock to give phone to someone else.
Everything went great phone boots up fine but after the lte and sprint logos it just sits on the Samsung screen glowing....
what did I miss?

This seems to happen every now and then. Power down, then boot into recovery and factory reset. That should clear it up for you. If not, you might have gotten a bad download. Try downloading the file in this post: http://forums.androidcentral.com/sp...-only-unroot-return-stock-19.html#post2765428 and try Odin again, with this new file.

The OP of this thread mentions that you shouldn't use this unrooting method from 4.3. But I didn't get the official 4.3 update. I flashed 4.3 with the Knox removing files etc. So can I use this unrooting method before selling my phone? If not how do I go back to stock? Thanx!

If you didn't accept the OTA, and don't have Knox installed, this should work fine. It will put you back to a 4.0x version ROM. You'll then get two OTAs that upgrade you to 4.2.1. A third OTA request will be fore 4.3.
