[UPDATED 12/30/2012][Sprint Only]UnRoot and Return to stock

Re: UnRoot and Return to stock

Factory reset as normal didn't fix anything. I started this guide. After my phone restarted (now stock). I constantly get android.process.media has stopped also tochwiz, acore &, gapps errors occur. Now I cant do much on my phone with the constant error pop ups.

Hey, I apologize. Somehow I missed your last post. Are you still having the same problem? If so, my suggestion would be to do one of two things. (1) Unroot following this thread, and then reroot. You'll have all your stock apps back. Or (2), flash a known good Touchwiz ROM, which will include all the google apps. My recommendation would be either the stock rooted MD4 (4.1.2), MOAR 6.0 or Wicked Sensations. Just copy the room to the top level of your internal or external SD card, and install in recovery. If you need any guidance in doing that, let us know.

i'm redownloading the file to go back to stock, did it last night but when loading it into odin i was getting "incorrect parameter" errors for some reason...???

also got a question about once i update to 4.3 OTA...i backed up my phone with titanium like i always have when doing an update, i backed up all "user system settings and user apps", once i do manage to get back to stock, get 4.3 all installed and then i root it again (which i know it works cause i used meyers method on my nephews virgin/stock 4.3 s3 without an issue) will it allow titanium to redo all the system data backups without ANY problems to make my phone basically how i have it setup right now? i'm not concerned about the user apps backup, it's the system data backup from 4.1.2 i'm concerned about.

thanks in advance

yep...over and over again, try adding the file to odin 3.07 while connected in download mode "the parameter is incorrect" error message pops up when adding the file...i don't get it why, but this isn't going to work for me if odin can't even load the file to return to stock

edit...fixed it myself, for others that get my error:

after extracting the file, rename it simply by deleting the ".md5" part out of the name and leave it ending as ".tar" and it will work...also, once you flash it back to stock, let the phone reboot itself, i was getting a lot of process has stopped failures, reboot the phone into recovery by shutting it down, holding vol up/home/pwr buttons, wipe your phone cache/data and then you're golden and NOW back to stock...log in to your google, blah blah, then start doing your OTA network updates until 4.3 is downloaded and installed then you can root again...i'm still in the OTA updating phases and will post back once finished completely.

Hi, I'm running the 4.3 OTA update, but I'm rooted and am running clockworkmod as my recovery rom. Is there anyway to reset the recovery rom to stock and unroot?

according to this guide, no, multiple warnings that you will brick your phone...why would you want to?? if anything, reset the system data and cache for the recovery maybe?

Is there another guide to remove CWM and return to stock recovery? I have some 4g issues and don't want sprint to see i'm running a custom recovery when I go to the store just in case.

sorry i was off of here finishing rerooting mine...i wouldn't worry about it, i would do a factory reset if anything, they won't know unless you tell them it's rooted

hey actually, just thought of it...in supersu, there's an option for full unroot in the settings

When I updated to 4.3 (not via the OTA, but the data partition is formatted the same), I didn't use Titanium to restore all my apps. I let them reinstall from the play store. But I was able to restore some apps via Titanium, and app settings for many apps, so I don't think you'll run into any problems restoring apps and app data. I'm not so sure about system data. I'd be hesitant to restore all that. 4.3 has many system changes compared to 4.1.2.

First, let's make sure I understand where you are now. You said you were running the OTA, but that generally fails if you don't have a stock recovery. What ROM are you running now? You can look in Settings / About device to check. What you'll need to do will be different depending on whether you're on 4.1.2 or 4.3.

I am trying to unroot using this method and Odin seems to hang during "system.img.ext4". Because I stopped it I can now only get into the download mode (Kies error on anyhting else). I am currently downloading the zip again but was wondering if you had any other suggestions. I am on 4.1.2

Edit: Problem may have been caused by my failure to reset the binary counter. Any options if this is the case?

I don't think the binary counter would cause this. But once you're unrooted you can't reset it, so Sprint will be able to tell it's been rooted. By all accounts, though, Sprint doesn't really care.

It sounds like it could be a bad download, so I think you're on the right track. Make sure the options in Odin are set as in the OP, and try again. As long as you can boot into download mode, you should be able to recover.

Thanks. I plan on re-rooting. I was going this route as it seemed the easiest to take care of the OTA update to 4.3 as that was failing and re-downloading. Currently I am trying again on the new download but it seems to be having the same result. Maybe I will just let it sit for awhile.

And make sure you set up Odin with your tar file before you plug your phone (in download mode) into your PC. Furthermore, wait for any drivers to install too.

Not sure why this worked but, as a last resort, I used Odin to download the tar without the phone being in download mode. That brought it somewhat back to life (lots of errors as it was booting) so I got into recovery mode and did a factory wipe/restore and now everything is good.

That's got to be the strongest story I have heard of in respect to a SGS3! I'm happy things finally worked out for you.

I hate to say this, but i'm in the same situation right now :-(. Odin started to hang in the same place "system.img.ext4" so I unplugged, did a battery pull to get out of download mode. It bricked my phone into a kies recovery mode request, so i fixed that and finally got into recovery mode and did a factory reset and cache wipe. However it's still hanging there :-( any suggestions? My whole reason for this is to try and fix the "no sim error" that i've been ignoring for months.
