Updating Telus Milestone to 2.2+

I have a Telus Milestone(couldn't find a forum for it), but I've tried nearly everything to attempt to update this phone past 2.1 in order to send apps to SD card among other things.

It is the quad-band version, stuck on 2.1, original carrier Telus; however, I have it now on the simple mobile network.

I've come to realize or think, RomManager is not the way to update this phone, I already have universal root and superuser permission on the phone, but I can't do much further, and don't want to brick phone.

If there is a way, what are the steps to updating this phone, what programs, and mods to look for, for this specific phone?

why cant you use ROM Manager to flash a custom 2.2 or even a 2.3 ROM?

You could just download Cyanogenmod from there site and then flash it in recovery.

The milestone bootloader or w/e is different, so a rom won't install.
