First off, Hello everybody!

Im a bit baffled and after an endless Google search, as well as trolling almost every Android forum there is for a method -- I come here with a request for aid.

My problem - in a nutshell - is that I live in Alaska, where Verizon officially does not have service. I end up running 100% off of their extended network from Seattle.

That being said, in my excited attempt to upgrade to ICS - I've hit a roadblock.

Menu->About Phone->System Updates is greyed out -- and ICS woln't push from Verizon without being in their formal network.

In my grand battle, I've contacted Verizon as well as Motorola and both have left me with zero resolve side from sending my phone in for a warranty repair. (Can't happen -- 2-3 weeks without a phone isn't possible for me.)

I haven't been able to figure out how to force the ICS update - or download anything close to a stable stock rom for my RAZR MAXX. Im not looking for anything fancy - just ICS (stable). My phone is unrooted (officially) from an emergency unroot to prevent a flag from Motorola's Diagnostic team.

At this point I truly am at a loss... Any ideas or tips? It'd be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!!

Bradenfontaine -- thanks!!!

Happen to have a link?? Can't seem to find it via Search.

Also - it includes a stock ICS update to 4.*.*?

If you had to, would it be so bad just to send it for warranty and use a prepaid phone for a couple weeks? Hopefully the utility Brad suggested will work though. 

Can you hook to wifi somewhere, motel parking lot, store. If you know of someone with hotspot, you could hook to that and your phone will think it's on wifi, this option will take longer.

Trucksmoveamerica has the correct answer. You should be able to do the update over WiFi.

From the Verizon Website:

Link: System Updates - DROID RAZR / RAZR MAXX by MOTOROLA

Wording from Website:

When roaming outside the Verizon Wireless coverage area, a system update notice will not be received. To receive the system update over a Wi-fi network, refer to Setup WiFi Connection for assistance assistance then check for a system update.

I live in AK too....and got the OTA push. Problem is....now it won't install. And yes I have wifi. Yes I've rebooted phone. No I will not reset or send out of state for activation. Verizon has already comped me for my troubles with activation in the past but like the OP it's not feasible or realistic to be without my phone. Google voice be damned ;-)

I was even further away than Alaska last week while I was in West Virginia. No service = No Update. I had wifi and it still didn't work. I went to Amish country in Pennsylvania for 4 hours and they had 4G (no electricity but 4G???). While I was there the update pushed and installed so that when I got back to WV I was able to just do some clean up work.

If you can find the link to Brad's suggested utility, you should be fine. Good luck!

I created a login just to comment on this post.

I found this after searching google far and wide for others that had the same problem with extended service area updates. Finally i found someone else that had my problem.

My problem was that i could download the update for ICS on my droid 4 via wifi but i couldn't install.

I found out it was because the phone was still technically in the extended service area. It wasn't until i disconnected by sleeping the phone or putting it in airplane mode is when the notification appeared for to install.

Hopefully someone else who has this issue will find my answer.
