Upgrade from S5 to S7

How do I back up my S5, and then restore everything to my new S7?

I do believe every S7 comes with an adapter in the box. It's used to transfer everything from your old phone to your new one using Samsung Smart Switch.

It is as Colby says. Smart switch will transfer most things. Pull the sd card out before you do it.
You have gone from a corolla to a Porsche, you will love the new phone once you get used to the many settings options!

Smart switch will not transfer your data from your apps, just the apps I'm afraid. You need to use other apps if you need to transfer your over app data.

when my brother, that means I had to do it for him, swapped S7-S7 it basically cloned the phone, everything was the same as far as I know. But going from S5-S7 might be different. He also does not have an SD card.

However if I'm turning in the S5 for credit against the S7, should I first back up the S5 using Kies or some other app? And will I then be able to restore the backup to the S7?

Yes. Just back it up using Samsung Smart Switch. That's the program that will restore everything you've backed up to your S7. I don't think Kies will work to restore to an S7.

When I get the S7 I will already have turned in the S5. So would it work if I backed up the S5 to my Galaxy Tab2 beforehand, using Smart Switch, and then transferring the data from the tablet to the S7?

Any pitfalls I should watch out for?

I've only ever backed my S6 up a laptop and restored it to my new Samsung phone. I've never tried putting it on a tablet. But if you install Samsung Smart Switch on your S5 & Tab 2 and back it up, you should be able to restore to your S7 when the time comes.

Kies does NOT work on an S7. Kies only supports up to the S5. Doing a backup with your S5 through Kies won't do anything for you because you will not be able to restore it to the S7.

I've used Smart Switch to back up my S5 to my PC, and will now go about getting the S7 and then restoring everything to it.

Once again, thanks for all the help.

As it turned out when I exchanged phones the Bell store manager moved all the data for me from the S5 to the S7, and then showed me how to reset the S5 and delete everything. Terrific service!

But as I get to know the S7 I'm sure I'll be back here with questions.
