i am due for an upgrade any day now. i want to be sure my phone is compatible with me Pioneer AVH 4100 NEX and will run android auto.
my verizion GS4 says it cannot run android auto (it is Lollipop 5.0.1).

i am thinking about the following phones
  • lg g4
  • droid turbo
  • nexus 6

does anyone have any experience with any of these? do they run auto?

I've used the Nexus 6, Moto X (both versions), HTC One M8 and M9, LG G4 and Galaxy S6.

If in doubt, best answer is always Nexus IMO.

LG G4 does work.
But if your main concern is Android Auto (and don't mind internal storage space), go Nexus. Those don't have a lot of the carrier nonsense, not to mention it's pretty much the safest bet with all things Android/Google, like Android Auto.

As a Nexus 5(and former Nexus 4) owner, my opinion is that there are numerous adventages with going Nexus.

More timely updates
Longer updates (up to 2 years with my N4)
No BS overlays/UIs(i.e. stock Android)
No carrier tie-ins
Usually budget friendly (I'm looking at you, Nexus 6)
Better compatibility not just with Google apps/systems, but all apps.

I bought my 32GB Nexus 5 about 6 months ago for like $220. You should be able to find a similar deal now. Saw 16GB on slickdeals the other day for $150. The Nexus 5 may be a few years old, but it's still a very very good phone, especially with the updates to the OS. For me, as long as they don't solely offer $600 phones like the 6, I'll continue to buy from the Nexus line (or whatever Google may call it in the future) for some time.

Google claims compatibility with most phones running Android V5.0+ but has a disclaimer for "some" models.

Avoid the new Moto G for now - known issues with Android Auto and no timeline for when it might be fixed. My former Nexus 5 worked great though.

My Oneplus One works but some roms have a bug that affects font scaling, making AA unusable. Latest CM12.1 and Oxygen OS both work, though.

At first I couldn't get my LG G3 to work. Then I tried again after a couple days before I would give up. All of a sudden it stared working! So far so good.

Update...Moto G 3rd gen now works with latest updates of Google Play services and Android Auto

My Droid Turbo is NOT working with my 2015 Sonata.

Update: I saw someone else suggest turning on USB debugging, and that got mine working.
