Upgrade to Pixel 5?

I have a Pixel 3XL and it it is running great no issues very happy with it. I am looking for a reason though to upgrade to the Pixel 5 when it comes out. Here are two reasons holding me back: smaller screen, only a mid range processor (765G). Given the leaked specs I am looking for reasons to switch and any reasons opinions and insights are appreciated. Thanks.

Reason to switch: It appears you WANT to. Sufficient, in and of itself (g)

There's nothing my 3XL doesn't do that I want it to. And, since getting a replacement on the warranty I had when my phone took a deep dive, I've got a brand new battery. Will look at what the 5 has to offer, but certainly not going to pre order. Guaranteed to be savings for waiting a few months.

I was thinking about going to the 5, but not happy it will be smaller than my 3XL.

I think you need to make that final choice for yourself! It does appear that you'd like to give it a try, though!

Perhaps purchase it and take it home, give it a test drive, and return it within the return window if it wasn't what you expected it to be. That way, you know you won't be missing out on anything if you do end up keeping your Pixel 3 XL.

Keep us updated on what happens!

I had been thinking the same, but (at least from my perspective) the screen being only marginally smaller would be easily offset by the elimination of the notch and the more substantially reduced overall size and easier one-handed operation.

With my battery nearly kaput (operating at35% of original capacity), I'm disinclined to invest $100 into replacing the battery - though everything else is operating fine - if I can instead invest that towards another phone that while still getting at least some value in trade on the 3 XL, whereas in another year it won't likely even be an option. Providing such new phone offered a reasonable tangible benefit.

5G is the only 'new' thing that excites me, but I'd been figuring it would be quite a while before there would be any real benefit, until yesterday when I witnessed a Samsung S20 5G pull a speed test at nearly 200Mbps while my phone alongside it pulled about 25Mbps, both on T-Mobile. Pretty sure that was running on sub-600, so not something I'd need to be standing on one foot with my head cocked at 30 degrees to the left and moving my left hand in a figure 8 to get the needed signal.

Eagerly anticipating info on both the 4a5G and the 5. I figure processor performance should be about the same as on my 3XL, which I have never felt is lacking, and wouldn't mind a plastic back. I still don't get how using a material like glass that costs more to manufacture, is more likely to break, costs more to repair when it breaks, adds more weight to the phone, and the generated perception of higher quality or better appearance is rendered moot by its enclosure within a case by probably 90% of users is called premium...

That was a big win for the phone manufacturers when they successfully conned us all into thinking glass is a "premium" material. There is a lot of glass everywhere I go.

Does anyone know if / what the photo storage specs are on the P5?

I still have unlimited HD picture storage with google. Very reluctant to give that up.

I like glass on the front of my phone, but I have never understood why manufactures think glass belongs on the back of phones.

Gorilla Glass and the like are 'premium' compared to regular glass. Similarly, there are cheap and premium versions of plastics.

I have no issue with, and in fact prefer, a premium plastic, for lower cost that the OEM needs to pass along, greater durability, cheaper (and less likely needed) repair costs - especially in light of the fact that if I held an aesthetic preference for glass, it would be moot when put in a case.

At least pixel 5 has gorilla glass 6 , I seen the pixel 4a has GG 3

Well, I buckled under and am, for at least this generation, leaving the Pixel family.

Couldn't pass up TMobile's deal - $500 off the S20 FE (trading in my 3XL for part, and bill credits over 24 months for the balance), $200 more off via T-Mobile Insider code, ended up ordering it essentially just for the cost of taxes.

Hopefully the change won't be too shocking, and any pains are overshadowed by the gains. I know I'll miss the camera but can deal with "just really good" photos in place of "great"

Frankly I’m not all that wowed by the P5. The price is a turn off compared to what value it brings to me personally. I’m not an avid photo taker, just the occasional shot. My Pixel 2 still works very well and takes great pix.
I like the larger battery and bigger screen in an overall smaller package tho. I may wait until next year when the price drops by hopefully quite a lot, then maybe by then my P2 battery will be in need of a boost and paying for the P5 will make more sense. Also with android 12 betas rolling out in the spring I’d need a newer device to be able to access those as the P2 is no longer supported.

Still original battery in your pixel 2 ?

Yes, accubattery gives it 74% health rating. However I was playing around with a new iphone part of the time which certainly helped take the load off the pixel. Even so tho this battery is still pretty dang good.

Awesome

The full resolution backup went away with the Pixel 3A and never came back. I may hold onto my Pixel 3 through the 2022 cutoff for that reason alone. I offload my Sony mirrorless photos to my Pixel 3 to get the full resolution backup of those 24 mp files.

i was looking forward to this phone..but now just kinda dissapointed. the gap between 4a 5g and 5 isn't $200 for me.

still sticking with my OG pixel for now til then...battery is my only concern as I lose about 20-25% overnight and get about 10 hours out a full charge (light to normal use)

I'm holding on to my Pixel 3. I really want to wait and see what steps Google will take with 2021 line up. The 5 is nice but not nice enough for me to upgrade from my Pixel 3, especially since my 3 is still kicking out decent performance for me. I'm a light average user and I feel I can get at least another year out of the 3. However, that sorta sage is soo pretty

If I catch the 5 at a awesome sale price like $150-$200 off I can't pass that up.

The Pixel 5 looks awesome in the sense that it has 4080mAh in a compact 144mm body like the 4a.

That's an insane jump in capacity from the 2800mAh of the P4!

Not to mention, no stupid glass back!
