Upgrading from...

So, I have a question for all you moto guys that are looking to upgrade from the OG Droid. From what I've read, the best thing about Motorola phones is their hardware, yet I have read through this thread and see a LOT of complaints about just that. Screens not working, issues charging, etc.

This may not be a perfect analogy, but it sounds a lot like American cars vs. Japanese cars as far as initial quality vs. long-term quality.

My old Oldsmobile ran great if not better than my Nissan when they were both brand new, but as they both got older, the Nissan continued to run great, while the Oldsmobile starting having issues.

The reason I bring this up is because, as I've mentioned before, I'm an HTC Incredible user, and this phone is just as awesome (maybe even better thanks to CM7) as the day I got it, with no hardware issues whatsoever (knock on wood).

It's entirely possible that it's just because of the small sample size in this thread, and I could be way off base, but it's a point I thought could be valid.

I'd love some feedback/response to this from the moto guys here, as I'm still not 100% certain I want the Bionic.

Great anaology by the way. I understand exactly what you are saying. My OG Droid is dying because I dropped it in a puddle during a rain storm and somehow its still working. I love motorola because of their reception. On my plan we have a Thunderbolt (dont get me started) and a fascinate. Neither of which will pick up towers nearly as well as my OGD. The samsung is so bad we can't even tether with it because it won't even hold a 3G tower. This is our third unit so it must be a pretty universal issue. (I should have learned from my Omnia) Considering that we are getting 4g this week, thats pretty pitiful. It stays on 1x at least half the time. Not to mention the fact that Sammy has never heard of a notification light which is my favorite feature on my phone. Moto has always had the best reception from my experience. I'm sure others would disagree, but they have never failed me.

OG Droid here. Still running perfect. Never had a single problem with it.

I almost want to keep using it till it dies to see how long it will go. It will obviously be kept as an emergency backup when I do get a newer phone.

Thank you for this! I have had poor reception in the past with HTC and Samsung products, this is the main reason I want to stick with Motorola. It is great to hear the experiences of people who have first hand knowledge. I keep hearing form guys that say " oh, the reception is about the same on the phones from all manufacturers" , that might be true if you live under a tower, lol. I don't care how many people say they are the same, the true test comes when you have a Motorola phone side-by-side with one of these other phones in an area with a weak signal, i've been the guy that everyone wants to borrow my phone because it was the only one that could actually make a phone call, lol.

Oh, I am upgrading from the OG Droid, I actually bought mine the day before it was released. :) Phone still works fine. OC kernel 1.25GHz. Can be a bit laggy, I just got rid of some of the extra widgets I was using, down to 3 now, and it is working a little better again.

My ogdroid envy is reaching critical levels :p

Hats off to all my fellow sufferers of winmo, bb, or a plain dumbfone.

Coming from an eris and I can't wait to drop it. My desire to get the bionic comes from wanting a phone I can use without severe lag and all the other little issues that drive me toward insanity. It should not be so hard to make a call on a phone... I'm not getting stuck with a motorola wannabe for another two years because it'll save me 100$. Motorola better release this thing already or I'm gonna... well I'll prolly sit here quitely and wait for it. But it will be with a heart full of discontenment. :-[

My hats off to you. I had a touch pro 2 for 2 weeks and couldn't handle windows, but it had the best keyboard ive ever used. Loved the hardware, hated the software. Ended up returning it and eventually getting a Droid 1. Which i have today.

I also considered getting a thunderbolt but rooting the Droid and installing a custom Rom and kernel has kept me happy the last few months. Thats allowed me to wait for the bionic.
I unlocked it and put a custom rom on it so it's not as bad as the stock phone. Performs much faster with much nicer graphics. It'll usually last at least a day from a fresh restart, then it starts bogging down and needs to be restarted again. Other than that though, it hasn't been too bad. Just the occasional freeze every once in a while. Can't wait for the Bionic though since I want android and the TP2 is getting dated. I ran android on the TP2 for a while, but it was still missing bluetooth which was a must for me so I switched back to WM6.5.
