Upgrading the OS on a rooted phone

I have a rooted ver. 4.0.4 Razr MAXX and want to upgrade to ver. 4.1.x. I also have the 4.1 root files to copy from my PC to the phone. However, they won't copy and the upgrade to 4.1 fails. Other than reseting the phone to its original unrooted state, running the 4.1 upgrade from Google/Verizon and then rooting the phone in 4.1 --- a tedious and lengthy process -- is there any other way to upgrade my rooted 4.0 phone to a rooted 4.1 phone?

Upgrade, no. Unless you install the missing parts. Upgrade won't work without them as you have seen.
