I have a google play music account currently with years and years of curated playlists and upload music in there. I desperately don't want to mess that up!

I am though interested in getting You Tube Premium but when I hit upgrade I get the following message

You have Google Play Music
You may be able to save money by cancelling Google Play Music because it's included with YouTube Premium.
Once you get YouTube Premium, we'll send you an email explaining how to cancel Google Play Music. Learn more.

I had hoped it would just upgrade my existing set up and charge me the extra cash but it seems like it sets up a new profile on my account and I then have to cancel my existing music subscription.

The implication then is I will lose everything I have in the existing music account (ie uploaded music, playlists, all my fussy album art!). Has anyone done similar yet and do you know what might happen or if I should be worried?

Thanks

Do it the other way around. You should just subscribe to Google Play Music's unlimited service for $9.99/mo. That automatically gives you YouTube Premium (previously known as YouTube Red). Supposedly, all of your Google Play Music playlists, purchased music, and uploaded music in your music locker will port over at some point in the future (but it's not clear when).

Nope, you can't do it like that anymore. I'm trying to find out myself and now have GPM family and youtube family and need to cancel GPM but want to keep the playlists.?

I'm too scared to do it but according to the Google support person I spoke to the GPM account is tagged to your email/google account so even if you cancel your "old" one it will still all be there on the "new" one because they are effectively the same thing. Basically you are cancelling a charge not a service.

But like I say, I've just left it because I'm worried it will wreck everything!
