OK, so never have had any drama with this process before - just attach one end of the cable to the phone, the other end to an USB port on the computer, open the windows, find the correct directories and copy.

This time it wants me to choose between MTP Media Device and PTP Camera. And it does peculiar things in each mode. I did manage to get the files copied but with some struggles.

So, any ideas about this?

More info ...

Win XP Serv Pack 3.

The issues were odd and inconsistent. Would transfer 3 of the files then give an error message on the 4th. I could then copy the next 3 only, including the one that it stopped on. So i did get them copied. Some other odd behavior having to do with displaying the directories that i did not keep track of.

I just tried again.

Phone gives a non-stop sequence of tink-tink sounds with pauses. Appears to be connecting, then disconnecting or trying non-stop to connect and not succeeding.
Message on computer "One of the USB devices on your computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it."
Further message "Try to reconnect; if unsuccessful replace the device"
Same result with a different cable.

Seems like a hardware malfunction in the phone?

OK, just tried a different USB port on the computer. Works fine now as usual.

I'll try it more from time to time to see if it re-occurs.

Thank you for the response

Mick

It might be a driver issue. Do you have updated drivers installed?

It was definitely the USB port. I ran Kies, checked for updates, backed up the phone contacts, all went well so drivers are up to date. Thanx,

Mick

Glad you figured out the issue. Was the USB port bad?

After trying a different cable with no change tried a different port and everything worked. Then i tried the original port again and no go. Finally back to the other port and good.

So yes it seems that that USB port has gone bad.
