Got some silly article from my Google alert this morning saying the watch might be totally different than before...but no source or rationale at all for that statement. I hope it's wrong, or at least that they keep the brushed metal body and substantial battery.

... agreed... as well as the GPS, LTE, 480x480 screen resolution, OLED screen and user accessible sim card slot! Basically, they should not mess with a good thing.
