Urgent- Unexpected Hyperlinks in email and SMS

Lately when ever my wife sends an email, using the Gmail app or sms, using the stock app, from her EVO, it comes with a word or phrase that has a hyperlink attached to it.

For example, she wrote the other day "I have transferred the amount in to your account" and the word "amount" was a hyperlink to amount.in - Amount Resources and Information. This website is for sale! and was underlined and in blue. (DO NOT CLICK THE LINK AS IT COMES UP AS UNSAFE)

She does have Lookout installed in her phone and has never installed any of the apps that were recently pulled by Google.

Does anyone have an idea as to what is going on and how to fix it?

Thanks,

What are some of the last apps that she installed? Just because it wasn't on the list that Google pulled, doesn't mean that more didn't slip through the cracks. Ahh, the beauty of openess.

I'd do a wipe just to be safe.

Before you wipe, can you give us a list of EVERY app she installed on her phone? Don't just look at the app drawer, go into manage applications and get them from there (you can leave out any of the Google, HTC, or Sprint apps)

Will look at her phone when I get home and get the list.

Is there an easy way of copying the list and sending it to myself or do I need to break out the pen and paper?

If she was rooted, I could make it easy, but if not then I can't help. Don't worry about anything from an obviously trustworthy source, like Facebook or Twitter or any well known app.

As an update, the wife is telling me that this happens also when she posts to Facebook using their official app.

I think that the best thing to do at this point is a reset since the issue is with a number of different apps with the only thing in common being that effects apps that allow you to type.

I will try to get a list of the apps she has though so that maybe it can be figured out what is causing this.

You can also go to market.android.com, login with your Google account and get a list of apps.

That won't list sideloaded apps though. An app might have found its way onto the phone even if the user wasn't aware or doesn't remember.

Here are the downloaded apps on my wife's phone:

-= Save my Attach =-
AK Notepad
AppBrain App Market
ASTRO
Battery Indicator
Email
Fandango
Gingerbread keyboard
Headache Journal Free
Hearts! free
Howcast
Jorte
JuiceDefender
Lookout
Picasa Tool
Qik
Remote Wave
RockPlayer
ShareMyApps
Tango

Just charging the phone now before doing the reset. I do not see anything that would cause the problem.

Me neither. The biggest chance is "Hearts! free" because I couldn't find it on Appbrain. The other ones all seem like reputable apps.

Did a reset of the phone so we will see if it fixes the problem. I will post back with an update in a few days.

It has been a few days and the problem seems to have disappeared. Of course I had some minor issues with Android immediately after the reset but they seem to have worked themselves out with use.

Still don't know what caused the problem but at least I was able to fix it.

Thanks to everyone who posted to help me.

It started up again creating hyperlinks in e-mail. I was able to reproduce it though. If when you type a period is inserted in between two words, it becomes a hyperlink. If you type "able.to" (without the quotes) it becomes a hyperlink.

According to my wife the periods are entered automatically when she types and that she is typing correctly. I will turn off the automatic formating of the keyboard and see if that helps.

What keyboard is she using? I know I hit the period alot when I try to hit space.

She is using the Gingerbread Keyboard as it is easier for her than the stock Froyo.

The one from the market?
