AC Question

My 16yo son leaves for a 13-day school trip to the UK in a few days and he's sure getting a UK SIM will work just fine. We could order from Amazon Prime still or he could go to a shop/vending kiosk once in the Shannon airport.

I'm a little worried that if things don't work we could be stuck with hundred$ or thou$ands in roaming fees with Verizon and or a bricked phone.

To complicate things (because nothing is ever simple with him) he has grandfathered unlimited Verizon data so we've been hesitant to switch anything and risk losing that.

One other idea is to switch his brother's account the unlimited plan then just put that account on his phone and go with the Verizon plan.

Any advice/recs would be greatly appreciated.

So long as you remove the Verizon sim card, you won't be charged any roaming on Verizon.

The other option is to get an international plan with Verizon. Set the phone to restrict background data, and disable images from auto loading in emails. I did that and was able to use it internationally sparingly to check emails and very light emergency browsing and remained within the limit.

In your case you can enable this plan as a backup, in case the uk sim doesn't work out.

Yes, but that is really expensive. I would just get a local SIM that is what I do when traveling internationally. On the Verizon plan a single ten minute call will be almost $18. If he does any type of surfing or watching video the cost will be very high.
