After Samsung made their US locked version announcement today for the S7 and S7 edge, I now will have to rethink my plans of pre-ordering the Note 7 as soon as it's available. I'm thinking I'd rather wait a few months and get the US unlocked version that will likely become available. Anyone else thinking this way?

I apologize for sounding ignoramus but what exactly are the benefits of an " unlocked " phone ??

I've always been with ATT and had phones they've supported. A few months ago I was going to purchase the HTC 10 unlocked but was waiting on the Note 7 and was also going to preorder.

With all the excitement of the unlocked S7s and perhaps the Note 7 I may wait too if it's worth waiting ?

Thanks in advance

You are free to use it on any carrier of your choosing. The factory unlocked phones include the radio hardware to support all of them. There is also none of the carrier bloatware installed and updates will come directly from Samsung instead of having to wait for the carriers to approve an update.

On which it has radios available (and maybe not any CDMA carriers, like Verizon and/or Sprint).

MOST of the GSM carriers, not all of them. Not the CDMA variants (or, at least, not all the time).

SOME of the GSM carriers is about the best we can hope for. (I'd settle for AT&T, TMobile and their network providers. Or a model that covers all the CDMA carriers and their variants.)

The Galaxy S7 and S7 edge unlocked phones that Samsung released today do in fact have all of the radios GSM and CDMA. That is why I said that, My Nexus 6P also has all of the GSM and CDMA radios. Since Samsung did that for the S7 and S7 edge, I would fully expect them to do the same for an unlocked Note 7.

This.

If Samsung did it, I wouldn't be surprised if the Unlocked came out months after carrier release.

Exactly. That was the point of my thread here. I was fully planning to pre order the Note 7 as soon as it was available, but now I might have to chill and see if they drop an unlocked US version in a few months. I can just rock my Nexus 6P until then.

Would be good if an unlocked Note 7 also had an FM radio. That would enable me to get sports and news without having to burn through limited data.

The unlocked should. Even for the S7 Edge there is one.. It's just some carriers disabled them.

I would like it if they could release one on the same day as the carrier models.

But I wouldn't be surprised if they did so months later.
