USB Mass Storage on Nexus 4 (or lack of)

One thing to remember is that files only show up IF your android is unlocked. Caused me some frustration did that!

According to BBQ log the next nightly of CyanogenMod 10.1 is going to include the ability to toggle between MTP and UMS modes.

The toggle will be hidden for the Nexus 4, because that feature is only meant for phones with a physical/removable SD card. If the toggle was visible and you tried it on your Nexus 4, data loss would be very possible.

this may not help the OP, but Mac users need to download Android File Transfer in order to send/ receive files to/from their N4.

That works wonders for my N4..appreciate that! My first android phone, and I'm enjoying the versatility but I have a lot to learn from those of you who've had Android for awhile...thanks in advance.

I'm not giving up my iPhone 4s...so now I will be sharing a SIM and using Straight talk for both going forward. I still enjoy the iPhone and now, the N4 as well!

It's impossible on the Nexus 4 because the /storage/sdcard0 is not a real partition. It uses a FUSE driver (a command called "sdcard") to mount the user's media folder from the EXT4 formatted /data partition at /storage/sdcard0. The FUSE driver strips away the EXT4 permissions and case sensitivity which is requirement for /storage file systems. When you store files in the /storage/sdcard0 directory, it consumes space on your /data partition.

On Cyanogenmod 10.1, if you insert an EXT4 formatted SD card, it will automatically use the "sdcard" utility to mount it at /storage/sdcard*. The real SD card partition will be mounted at /mnt/fuse.

on my rooted nexus for this is what i do to connect it to my pc as USB mass storage:
1.download the app called usbSharer
2.select folder or multiple folder that you want to share or mount to yor PC
3.give 1,2 6gb or whatever you want
4.share mode RW(read and write)
5.plug nexus 4 to yor pc and hit share.
6.enable UMS
7. :) mounted as USB mass storage read abd write to your nexus 4 partition.

Should be fixed on the newest version of Ubuntu.

I use ubuntu 10.10, yes I know it's old, I have no problem connecting my N4, just had to add it in udev android 51 rules. I haven't yet tried connecting tho a Windows machine.

Try the Nexus Root Toolkit from WugFresh: Nexus Root Toolkit v1.6.3 | WugFresh

There is a very comprehensive driver solution troubleshooter in there. Hooked up my GNex and N4 to Windows 8...

Well I'm still searching on how to activate UMS without unlocking or rooting but I found out how to gain access to the developement menu in the Nexus 4 4.2.2 You got to Settings*>About Phone>then scroll down to the build number eg. JDQ39 and tap it 7 times very important ''7 times'' and a text will appear saying Congratulations you are a developer. Then go back to Settings and Dev Options will be available and placed just before About Phone.

Try it i'm not joking, i'll continue my research on how to get UMS on the phone and post results soon.
