I had put this on my To-Do list, but haven't got a round to it yet, looking for after-market rubber plugs for the USB and HDMI ports. Basically this would keep the sockets clean of dust, dirt, etc.
So this morning, I had the Droid X in hand, landscape mode, thumb resting apparently too close or on either the HDMI port or USB port, turned off the set-top DVD player with the other hand, was standing in front of one of our few remaining CRT televisions, and received a slight but noticeable and audible shock from one of said ports. I immediately thought that I'd done some damage to the Droid X, but everything is functioning.
This is just a caution, it was likely due to the static electricity from the television screen, but sock-footers on carpet/vinyl might want to be aware of this.
