I have several old USB web cams laying around a OTG cable, and can plug camera to tablet, but can not view anything... Tablet recognizes something (SB device) is plugged in, but That is about as far as it goes.... Anybody know of a app that will allow web cam to display on tablet screen... And no this is not about camera on back of tablet.... A "free" app would be desirable for testing....

I don't believe there is any way to input a video signal using OTG USB that would be usable or even understandable to an Android OS yet. Only storage or HID devices currently are serviceable through OTG USB.

Sorry I should clarified. No cam will work unless its the only one in the world made for Android. So it is still no there is no way to connect just any cam.

The issue is the driver there are no drivers for cam input out publicly. I don't think its impossible to buy a cam for your Android. I just don't think you will ever get a cam not expressly intended for Android to work.

There is a Satellite in orbit that is run entirely on an Android device. So anything is possible but this is one of those things your not going to have unless you build it yourself.

It's all about the drivers. I'm sure its doable, but maybe not that popular since most devices already sport cameras? I'd recommend posting this on XDA as a request, I'm sure someone over there would be able to port a linux driver to Android...

Yep.... Sorry to say but there does not seem to be to many people with interest in hardware here.... Seems if they are not interested in some specific thing for all practical purposes it does not exist.... But if you go to the website that is support for the video I posted , they are using three different Logitech cameras and there is a list of devices they run on.... But then again, all android devices are not created equal.... Like PC operating systems......

Think xda site has a lot more to offer to people who are interested more than just ***running apps***....

Yeah XDA is likely going to have more to offer. Android Central is more a feature rich device review site and not so much dedicated to development. Notice the high percentage of page area for ads.

I use USB Camera lite, found in google play app store. It's not free but it is only 4.99. It will put a live feed on your screen, no sound. I'm still looking for something that will allow use of my usb webcam on other social sites, not just skype. Still looking so if you found something let me know. Steve

Does not work with cameras in general (or both my cams) only specific cams listed on their website...

Dale

Cam information is probably not helpful as both cams are old and were $2 yard sale items and I was able to find driver for both for a PC but probably not anything of real "value" to use on tablet... Seems that each cam manufacture has its own proprietary drives and internal specs so the is nothing generic out there (app) that would work for almost any camera in general...

Think its sort of a lost cause, but would be cool to put cam on long USB cable and use it as a inspection camera where one can not "see' specially if cam has lights on it....

Thanks anyway...

Dale

Web cams have a standard called UVC and most that have that standard don't need drivers to work with them ... which helps with compatibility across the board mac window Linux

Anyway camerafi is free takes video and photos i think
