Using a temp phone without messing up WhatsApp history +

My Xiaomi Mi Max 3's screen has just died and I forgot to set up my WhatsApp & SMS history back up.

I'm going to order replacements parts but they won't arrive until mid-January, therefore, I'm hoping to use my old Samsung Galaxy Note 3 in the meantime.

Currently I can continue using my WhatsApp on my PC although I've already put my SIM into the Note 3 but haven't installed WhatsApp yet so not sure what's going on there.

If I do install WhatsApp on the Note 3, will I lose my history on the Max 3? Ideally, is there a way of either merging the old history (once I fix the Max3) with the new history on the Note 3 at a later date? The same goes for SMS & call history.

If I could somehow backup the history via WhatsApp via the PC then that would solve the issue but can't see any settings to do so.

What would you recommend? Should I not install WhatsApp on the Note 3? I'm dreading the moment when the WhatsApp on the PC states it's no longer connected to a phone because then I'll really be buggered.

Thanks and hope you can help.

I think if the screen is completely dead, your best bet would be to wait for the replacement parts to arrive and use Whatsapp on the PC. There's no way to presently download Whatsapp chat history to a computer. Especially if hasn't saved a copy of the backup locally (as you said you hadn't set up the backup). If you sign in with a new device, Whatsapp will close your account from the Mi Max and give you a fresh start on the Note. Which is also something you don't want.

Assuming you have Google backup turned on, your SMS and call history would get automatically backed up over Wi-Fi. You can check your google Drive under backups to check when the last backup was.
Same would go for WhatsApp, the WhatsApp backup file would be separate though.
Once you have a backup dated so that it would have captured all your latest messages you could then safely restore the files on your temporary phone.
And no, there's no way of merging two WhatsApp backup files that I'm aware of.
As long as your phone remains connected to the internet the PC WhatsApp should continue working.
