If it's unlocked, even if it's carrier brander, shouldn't you receive updates for the carrier you're using it on?

I know it works like that in Canada so I can't see why it would be different in the States.

A carrier branded phone always gets updates from the carrier irrespective of if its sim locked or unlocked. Its like that in any part of the world.

I got a G3 with Rogers that I unlocked and brought to Videotron.

I receive my updates OTA via Videotron's network.

Sure you received while being on whatever network, you got it because Rogers approved the update and all Roger branded phones will get the updates irrespective of what networks they are running on. Updates are just bits it has nothing to do on what network you are. If you have Rogers branded phone updates get pushed from Rogers and you get it on whatever network you are since they are just bits on the internet.

PS: or in general updates gets pushed from the OEM once the carrier approves. Bottom line on a carrier branded phones the carrier decides when updates get pushed and it doesn't depend on what network you are using that phone on. You will get it when carrier approves them.

There is a difference of where the update originates verses how it is actually downloaded.

Yes. Your G3 is connected to internet, Rogers approved the update and Rogers/LG pushed the OTA update and you got it. Your IMEI/Serial number will indicate its a Rogers phone so only those phones get the OTA update.

Thing to know is every carrier branded phone will have its own firmware/software. Sim unlock just lets you use the phone on other networks that's all and it has no influence on software updates.

The Canadian version of the G3 is the same, nationwide. Same with the S5 (confirmed with the CSC).

Another possibility is to find a captured update file on the Verizon HTC 10 section of XDA Forums every time one is released by Verizon. (It normally deletes itself once it installs, but some people capture the file and post it just for situations like yours.) Then it's a simple procedure to update the phone. (If it's posted, so will be the instructions.)

I think you can still get updates. I robbed my Droid Turbo 2's sim card to use in my Nexus 6P in February, and it still got its update to Marshmallow in March over wifi but with no sim card inside.

I had a Verizon Galaxy S6 i bought from BestBuy full price and used it with tmobile, I updated to 6.0 using my laptop because my phone wouldn't find the update without a verizon sim inserted

So basically nobody has a clue lol. Some phones get updates from Verizon without an active sim, and others don't. I guess only time will tell with this one. I wish Verizon would push that camera update right now so I can be sure before I close my Verizon line.

You can get an update without active service. You don't have to have a SIM in the phone in order to pull the update. Being on Wi-Fi will be enough. I've done it plenty of times. I did an update on my Verizon Moto X 1st Gen before I sold it. I had my SIM in my unlocked Nexus 6 at the time. I put the phone in Wi-Fi and checked it for an update. I pulled the update and afterwards I did a factory reset on the phone and shipped the device to its new owner. It will work.

Depends on the phone. I'd look ask the M7, M8, and M9 forums if those with the Verizon models are able to get System Updates without a Verizon SIM.

Well maybe I'll just stick with the Verizon prepaid service then as I don't want to miss updates. I'm fine with the service, I'm just trying to build credit so that's the only real reason I wanted to keep the T-Mobile post paid account. I don't know how much credit I'd even realistically build using T-Mobile anyways.

Looks like the Verizon version lacks 4g aws and band 12 lte which tmobile uses. It does support tmobile lte bands 2 and 4.

It is.

I am using tmobile terminology, which means that 4g = h+.
