I have a friend named Arik. However Bixby interprets it every time as Eric. Problem is, it will not find his contact record to make a call or text. Changing the spelling of his contact record in Contacts is not an option because I am way too OCD change it.

So Bixby has the button to "teach it" and I changed the spelling 4 times to keep trying. However Bixby always heard me as Eric.

Any ideas? I wish there could be a way to manually create an alias so that a spoken command translates to a different spelling.

Try using Google Assistant to accomplish the same task to see if it gets the name correct. It might just be a matter of your pronunciation if they both have the same issue.

I will try that but I can say that using Google voice dictation instead of typing during text messages does spell it correctly.

Similar issue with one of my contacts. Bixby just isn't learning the name.

He has a surname and it also has an uncommon spelling which is not picked up correctly by Bixby but is picked up by Google during voice texting. I didn't list the surname as I didn't want to put his name out on the internet.

Perhaps if you put his surname in with his first name (Arik Smith) the machine would understand a longer word and your OCD wouldn't be offended... ;-)

Jokes aside, here is what I would suggest you do. In the Contacts app, open your friends contact item and edit his nickname. For example, I have Wife as the nickname for my wife instead of her lengthy name. Now, this will be recognized by the Messages apps as well WhatsApp app. So then, in my case, I just tell Bixby:

"Open WhatsApp and send the message I will be late for dinner to my wife"

That should work for you.

This does seem to work! Thank you I had no idea the nickname field even existed let alone had functionality beyond a simple text field.

It does this to one of my kids, and his name is a common name with the common spelling. I have tried to "teach" Bixby several times but it just does not work.

Well I'll be.....! I didn't know about the nickname thing! You learn something every day! You're a clever bunch here!:-)

I had to play with this before I responded, probably too late for the OP, but it might help others.

Bixby can recognize if you spell something out. So if you give it the command and spell the name of the contact it might be better able to recognize which one you want. But the Nickname option is probably a safer bet.

I was very hopeful the nickname trick would help me as well. Google voice dictation does not recognize the correct spelling of my name, although it is spelled appropriately under my nickname . It comes up with one of the following three options jolynda Joe Linda or Chill Linda, none of which are Jolinda.
Does anybody have any other Great Brain storms out there? Obviously this is a word that I use frequently! Haha!
