I am headed to australia next week and was hoping hoping to use my new captivate for navigation directions. Will this be possible? I know GPS will need to be enabled, but will i alsop need international data? i wasnt planning on doing that, using it only as a navigation device if possible. any direction or answers would be very helpful.

ps. I did some searching but the only thing i can really find on the board is info about using GPS navigation on verizon phones, which doesnt apply since they dont roam very well period.

Yes, you'll either need a data plan, to be near wifi (suboptimal, of course), or get a GPS navigation app with the maps preloaded. I'm not sure there are any of those currently for general Android phones. TeleNav made one for the G1. But maybe there are some out there.

Too bad GPS essentially doesn't work for many people right now on the Captivate. Hope you're one of the lucky ones.

That does suck. Mine actually works great. I've used turn-by-turn nav a few times, maps, etc. and it locks on without a problem.

I used a friend of mines and it worked great. Very good locks no different number of satellites and acquisition time than our current Treo Pro or Touch Pro 2. I checked becasue I care about GPS and am looking at the Epic. I also looked at the threads and the problems seem to be user issues, which is perhaps why it isn't even listed in the problem/issues sticky.

In terms of using it internationally this usually breaks down into whether it has both aGPS and standalone GPS. Very few smartphones are aGPS only and most can fall back to standalone GPS (satellites alone)

You don't need any data connection for quite a few location based applications such as getting a fix to note onto phones you take.

And my pal has full Navigon (the second largest maker of navigation software and devices) on their Captivate which does not require a data connection (although it does require purchase).
