Using Franco Kernal with AOKP

Ok, next stupid question... What is a kernel compared to a ROM? So the big advantage of the Franco kernel is to help with battery life?

If your ROM is the car you are driving, the kernel is the engine. The android kernel is linux based, and it is the link between the firmware (ROM) and hardware (Phone parts: antennas, screen, sensors, etc). Any time any piece of the software wants to get information from or send it to a piece of hardware, that information has to pass through the kernel. Custom kernels let you over and underclock your CPU, alter the amount of voltage being used, set up power profiles, and most of the nice ones now let you enable hotplug (turns off 1 CPU core while the screen is off to further save battery juice), alter the color and gamma settings on your screen, and more.

A well made kernel can definitely increase your battery life, improve speed, make graphics and other operations smoother, etc etc. So to answer your question, Yes franco's are generally agreed to be really nice on battery, but that's selling them short.. I also find them to be very very smooth, stable, and there are a lot of options you get to toy with from within his app which is worth the investment.

Final note on kernels: every phone is different, not all silicone is created equally, and some people will find that some kernels agree more with their phone than others.. so you might not see the same exact results with each kernel that other people are claiming, and that's normal.

i agree on the app bought it yesterday and flashed the kernel working great so far already noticed better battery and the app def makes it nice as far as updates goes and intstaling it

OK, app purchased. We'll see how my battery life does tomorrow at work. Set to no logger and hotplug. Usually I'm at about 50% after a 10h shift.

Whoa! I went from 92 to 77% in a 35min phone call. Phone calls hardly ever eat at my battery. Something's amiss there. Ideas?

I don't talk on the phone much, but I always thought phone calls ate the battery the most.

I don't much either, but it usually seems to eat it much less than that. I'm going to charge it up and let it sit for a bit and see. I don't know what settings to try and change though to try and fix it if its still going down fast just sitting.

Do I have to cycle my battery when I add a new Kernel? (Cycle meaning charge the phone to 100 then use it until it turns off. Repeat 2-3 times) I read that it was good for ones software to recognize true battery life.

not really.
I let it run down to like 34% for two days and loving Franco with AOKP...going to buy his app...it's deserved.

No you never have to do that. Just use it normally. It will often take a couple days or power cycles for the any new ROM/system or kernel to settle before you see the most accurate battery life. No reason to drain it to zero or anything.

Downloaded Franco.Kernel M3 the other day. Haven't bought the app yet (i will) and just have the governor set through AOKP

Think of your kernel settling in as breaking in a car, but without any real limitations (i.e. not pushing it, etc.) Once you hit that "1000 miles" (or whatever it is), the kernel should be running at its peak.

My battery life has gone to poop since starting with the Franco kernel.

Goes down fast on rest, super fast on talk. Usually I can go a 10h shift at work and I'm at 50%. Today I was down to the low 30's at 8-9jh and that was with very minimal use. Talking eats my battery super fast compared to what I was experiencing.

Anyone have ideas on what I can try or if there are settings I might be missing?

When I download the latest nightly do I do it at 384 or 512mhz?

Have you messed with any of the settings? If so, what have you done?

Also, 384 should be more "stable."

Snareman... grab BadassBatteryMonitor (think thats what its called) from the play store.. yeah there's a ton of those apps but I like this one... Have it installed, charge your phone overnight, and in the morning reboot for good measure just to clear out any nuisance apps running in the background you might not realize. Go through the day with your normal use and, assuming you're still seeing that high drain, go into the app go to the App Sucker section. Use a few of the filters on top such as # of Wakelocks, # of times waking device, total amount of time kept awake, and % total power used... you'll see a bunch of different things listed that will tell you whats keeping your device awake and whats using so much power.

Share your results here and we'll take a look and help you decipher it. Lets see if its not just the kernel that's causing issues... remember there are TONS of factors that affect battery life :)

Thanks. I'll give that try and let you know what I come up with. It just struck me since I hadn't changed anything except the kernel when when my battery life went downhil.

Wanted to just share my favorite color settings for francos app. Love the blue and contrast these provide. Tweak and experiment at will of course :)

Just had to switch to leankernel. Was getting FC's on ROM Manager with Franco's. Still love the app though. :)
