Using galaxy note 2 overseas. New to android.

Hi everyone, I have been an iPhone user since the first one came out and I am switching to android. I want to get the galaxy note 2 however I travel a lot and I know that with the iPhone they are locked and you have to jailbreak and unlock it to use it overseas with a different SIM card. What is the process for the galaxy not 2 or any android phone? I'm new to android and know barely anything about it. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
