I've been hearing people say that they don't pay for text messages from their carrier but use Google Voice instead. How does this work? How much do you pay for text messages with Voice?

If you don't already have one, sign up for a free Google Voice account. Then download "Google Voice" from the Market. When people send text msgs to your Google Voice number, you will get a notification similar to regular texts. And it's free.

Can I use the same Google Voice number as the number I get from my carrier?
No, your Google Voice number will have to be a new number. You can port your existing number to GV for a small fee, but that will void your contract with your current carrier giving you an ETF in the process (and cause you to have to get a new contract to have any sort of data plan).

GV uses data to send/receive SMS. You don't pay anything.

GV numbers don't come from your carrier unless you're porting.
