using my s pen on note 5 and the screen write process disappears when...

using my s pen on note 5 and the screen write process disappears when I switch to a different application to gather information that i may want to include in my screen write note. It does not auto save or show as an app that i can toggle back to. I now have lost notes that I would love to retrieve. Does anyone know how? Is there an auto save that I am overlooking?
