Using notebook speakers with the Nexus 7

I have a "Sleep" utility on my Toshiba notebook that allows a device to be charged via one of it's USB ports. It works.

I'm also supposed to be able to hear music through the notebook speakers when a device is connected to it. I can't get it to work. The sound keeps coming out of the Nexus 7, not the notebook, speakers. Is there a setting, or something else, that I'm overlooking? Thank you.

are you sure you have the cable jammed in all the way, into the N7. It has the tightest headphone jack of any device I've used and many others have complained about it also.

Duh. Am I supposed to use a special cable? I just used a USB cable/connection.

Newbie here, so be gentle. :)

Only HDMI cables have audio and data on the same cable.
USB cables have power and data, but not audio.
Does your laptop have an aux audio input of some kind?

Not that I can determine. I searched the entire manual using the term "audio" and couldn't find anything. I could be just my lack of knowledge on this subject.

It's no big deal. I was exploring this simply out of curiosity. I listened to music on my Nexus with ear buds the other day and couldn't believe the good sound compared to using the built-in Nexus speakers. Made me wonder if I could use my notebook's stereo speakers.
